Imagine stepping into the shoes of Darren Seaverns, the mastermind behind the thrilling ports of Colossal Cave for Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro. This isn't just any game adaptation; it's a journey into the heart of innovation.
On one hand, Darren tackled the beast that is mixed reality on the Meta Quest 3, ensuring that the game not only runs smoothly but also dazzles with its immersive environment without dropping frames. On the other, he ventured into uncharted territory with Apple Vision Pro, riding the first wave of games designed for full immersion.
Join us as we unpack the challenges, the breakthroughs, and the sheer excitement of bringing Colossal Cave to life on these cutting-edge platforms. It's not just about playing a game; it's about experiencing the future of gaming through the eyes of those who are shaping it.
1. Darren what was the most challenging part of porting Colossal Cave to the Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro?
"Each had their own challenge, for quest 3 it was implementing mixed reality without hurting performance. Apple Vision Pro on the other hand had challenge of hardware compliance and overall just being part of the first wave of fully immersive titles on the platform, most of the issues faced in this port were issues that have yet to even be solved by others online so like most bleeding edge practices go lots of custom approaches were involved."
2. Can you share any unique features or enhancements that fans can expect in the Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro versions?
"If I were to focus on the new and exciting parts of the Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro ports the first thing would be the graphics across both ports, the art has been further optimized to look more like the other enhanced versions of the game. Now on an exclusive level Quest 3 has a new feature that allows the player to play in mixed reality as well as have different sized passthrough windows. The Apple Vision Port coming soon will feature full hand tracking allowing the player control everything with various pinches and gestures, using your fingers and hand movements to control the game really feels like magic.
3. How did the process differ between developing for Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro?
"The biggest difference when developing is the environment. Quest 3 is easiest and most efficient when done on my windows PC on the other hand Apple Vision Pro development needs to be on a silicon chip mac using xcode. I could go on about this quite a bit but the main point is my tools and sdks were extremely different for each minus the common ground of using Unity."
4. What aspects of the game do you think fans will appreciate the most on these new platforms?
"I think the fans will appreciate the graphical improvements as well as what makes both of these platforms special with each having their own strengths"
5. Were there any particular scenes or puzzles that benefited significantly from the upgraded hardware?
"In a way each scene feels like a better version of prior releases, colors are brighter, lighting was improved, and framerates are smoother."
6. What was your favorite part of the conversion process?
"My favorite part some might find equally as dreadful as exciting but digging into the Apple Vision Pro was fun, lots of unfamiliar and unknowns but with so many possibilities and a feeling that a device such as this really pushes the standard of VR to a much better place for users even on such a niche system"
7. How does the new Mixed Reality mode enhance the gameplay experience in Colossal Cave?
"Mixed Reality has a few benefits to the player.
1: Spacial awareness - This really helps keep people from tripping over the family dog, bumping into a coffee table, or even accidentally hurting those around the player.
2: Mixing Realities - Its really fun to get close to something in mixed reality mode and have it appear for example in a players living room, getting attacked by a dwarf feels like a knife is being thrown right through my office.
3: Multitasking - The player could take notes, watch tv, babysit, mow the lawn(not recommended lol) all while enjoying colossal cave in a window."
8. Did you face any unexpected challenges during development, and how did you overcome them?
"There has been many challenges thrown our way, one good example would be platform requirements and compliance. Both Meta and Apple have entirely different technical expectations of the developer, particularly for Apple Vision Pro we had to keep our ram usage and download size very low which was a bit of an annoyance because we wanted to shoot for the best looking graphics we can possibly go for in VR. This was solved by a tedious round of optimization and minor trade-offs to thin the build but if anyone at Apple sees this please allow devs to use more ram on fully immersive applications the system is more than capable with its current specs."
9. What’s your favorite feature in the new versions that you think players will love?
"My favorite feature currently is the hand tracking on the Apple Vision Pro, not needing controllers feels really good."
10. Any fun Easter eggs or surprises that players should keep an eye out for in these versions?
"Achievement hunters will be happy to see we have achievements now on Quest 3 and will have them as well on Vision Pro. There is also an easy mode for a more casual cave dwelling experience."

We sat down with Dan Thompson and Maddy his faithful companion, the mastermind behind our iOS and Android ports, to discuss the challenges, breakthroughs, and unique elements that went into bringing this classic adventure to your fingertips. From redesigning the user interface to optimizing for small screens, Dan shares his insights on how he transformed this legendary game for mobile platforms. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to the world of Colossal Cave, check out our conversation below to see how the magic was made! 📱✨
1. What were the biggest challenges you faced when adapting Colossal Cave for iOS and Android devices?
[DAN ]The 2 largest challenges were texture, material sizes, and the distribution process for Android and IOS to their respective servers/apps.
2. How did you approach redesigning the user interface for mobile devices? Any specific challenges or breakthroughs?
[DAN] The main challenge was taking a PC-based game using mouse-only, or mouse+keyboard locomotion and translating it to touch-screen controls.
3. Fitting such a large and intricate game onto small screens must have been tough—how did you manage it?
[DAN] We did tweak a few menus to fit better across mobile devices of all sizes, but luckily our game design/layout didn’t need to be altered for mobile.
4. What features or design elements did you prioritize to ensure a smooth gameplay experience on mobile platforms?
[DAN] We went through at least 3 prototype touch-screen controls (buttons)/layouts before landing on the published version.
5. Did you have to make any significant adjustments or compromises for the mobile versions compared to the original?
[DAN] We did have to adjust the materials/textures resolutions to better match the video capabilities of mobile compared to PC.
6. How do the iOS and Android versions differ, if at all? Were there platform-specific challenges you had to tackle?
[DAN] There’s no significant difference between IOS and Android from the game perspective, only underlying connections to IOS App Store, and Android Game Center to hook into achievements.
7. How does the touch interface enhance the gameplay of Colossal Cave? Did it change how any puzzles or interactions work?
[DAN] Touch interface works nicely on mobile, even more so for tablets. There were no changes made to interact with features of the game.
8. What was your favorite part of bringing Colossal Cave to mobile devices?
[DAN] As a “seasoned” developer, I relish new challenges. The backend technical challenges deploying to App Store, Google Play were very challenging and took a concerted effort to finalize to release the game on the apps.
9. Were there any moments in the game that translated particularly well—or particularly poorly—to mobile?
[DAN] I think the mobile experience for Colossal Cave on a tablet is a better immersive experience than the smaller phone screens – but, plays well on both.
10. How do you think fans of the original game will respond to the mobile versions? What do you think they’ll appreciate the most?
[DAN] Giving a beloved text-based parsing game a 3d twist will delight many gamers.
11. Did you include any special features or optimizations for mobile players to enhance their experience?
[DAN] No new specific features beyond the touch locomotion.
12. Given the portability of mobile devices, how do you think this version will change the way people experience Colossal Cave?
[DAN] Not having to have an expensive game machine, the mobile versions are more affordable entrance point for someone wanting to try Colossal Cave 3d.

From the Lens of Ken Williams: A Reflection on the First-Ever Adventure Game Fan Fair
It was an incredible experience seeing Roberta Williams busy with so many signings, surrounded by fans and fellow legends. It was truly special to have the three iconic ladies of Sierra — Lorelei Shannon, Roberta Williams, and Jane Jensen — together again.
Meeting the larger-than-life Space Quest Historian was another highlight, as fans eagerly brought a "few" items to be signed. It was a fantastic show and an unforgettable time for everyone involved.
We are still buzzing with excitement over the fan fair that took place 2 weeks ago. The experience was so enjoyable that it's still fresh in our mind!
