Fibonacci Production Studio
Newly opened recording studio in the U-District Seattle
Opening and continuing to run Fibonacci Production Studio is hands down the hardest thing I’ve ever done.
We opened our doors in the heart of the pandemic, June 2020, when everyone was fleeing from commercial space.
The studio business is a dying market because you can get good results from a simple home setup with today’s technology.
A professional studio separates the good from the great, but equipment is insanely expensive and the economics in this industry are horrible for the majority of creatives.
We’re also competing against studios with insane credentials and 15+ years of investment into equipment and skill development.
Then there’s the fact I started it seemingly out of nowhere…I had no credibility in the music scene. I play guitar, produce, and engineer, but that’s not necessarily a huge part of my personal branding. I did have credibility as a dancer and there was some crossover because of my roots in hip hop, but most of the relationships were newly developed as a result of owning the studio.
I was a really weak leader for a long time and as a result I made a couple bad decisions that I’m still dealing with the repercussions of till this day.
But once we got pushed to the edge where we had to make a decision to shut down or stay open, I knew I had to boss up or take a huge loss.
And I don’t really know how to quit, so…
I had to make hard decisions and let people go that were one foot in, one foot out, and replaced them with others that really wanted it.
I had to restructure my personal life to allow me to become a stronger person and make these decisions.
And we as a team had to keep believing that we’re doing something important when all signs were pointing to our eventual failure.
The other day one of the lead team members and I were out for his birthday lunch. During the lunch and multiple times that morning, we had a solid flood of bookings and merch orders come through.
Weird because this time of year is usually bad for studio business, but the sales were made and it took little to no effort on the day they hit.
That one day of sales paid for the entire month of rent. That means the remaining 29/30 days of the month are all profit which goes right back into our growth.
It’s a testament to perseverance and a statement to the fact that you can sustain a career from art if you put quality first.
It took three painful years to get here, but it finally feels like we cracked the code, and it feels like we’re just getting started.
AHHHHH!!!!! It’s here!!!
We’ll do another unboxing post tomorrow or Wednesday 🥹
FYI we’ve been on the wait list for 6+ months for this thing 😭😭😭
