Confused about what the new Contrast and Roll-Off settings in RED's IPP2 color processing (http://www.red.com/news/upgrade-your-workflow-with-ipp2-reds-new-image-processing-pipeline) is doing? Hopefully this illustration from Straightface Studios' Gavin Greenwalt can help.

The contrast setting defines an S-Curve to add contrast to the image and the Roll-Off modifies how the top 50% luminance of the contrast curve rolls off to white.

Thanks for the feature, Thinkbox Software!

"To generate a realistic flurry of snow throughout the entire overture, Straightface Studios needed a tool that could handle incredibly long viewing distances of over a kilometer, yet still be manageable for rendering and simulation. To complete the challenge, the team turned to compound geometry tool – Frost."

One technique you should have in your VFX toolkit is a cross-polarization setup. By adding polarizing gel to a light you can remove the specular reflected light, leaving just the flat diffuse color for creating cg textures. In this case we are demonstrating two photos taken one with and without a polarizer on a camera flash to illustrate.

Our friends over at Thinkbox Software wrote up a piece on our switch to their usage-based licensing system on our render farm.

With usage-based licensing for The Foundry's Nuke we now count minutes not machines. 100 machines rendering for 1 minute costs the same as 1 machine for 100 minutes. No more paying for licenses we aren't using and no more bottlenecks based on how many permanent licenses or subscriptions we have.

Straightface In the fast-paced worlds of 3D animation, VFX and motion graphics, time is of the essence, and productive facilities are consistently looking for better ways to streamline production. For nearly a decade, Straightface Studios has done just that using Thinkbox Software’s Deadline to manage its on-pre...

PNB Nutcracker Overture 02/09/2016

We were honored to be asked by the Pacific Northwest Ballet to create an opening video for the new version of The Nutcracker by George Balanchine and 'Olivia' illustrator Ian Falconer.

The animation is played live during Tchaikovsky’s Overture to open the show and takes you through an 1880’s New England forest, a small town, and finally arrives at the Stahlbaum house where you join up with some unexpected little visitors.

A New Holiday Tradition at PNB 12/04/2015

"The question every stager has to address is what to do visually during Tchaikovsky’s glorious overture; Boal and Falconer’s inventive solution is one of the highlights of the production. While the orchestra plays, a video (produced by the local company Straightface Studios), projected on a scrim, flies us over a snowy New England landscape, through a door opened by scampering mice, and into the Stahlbaum’s entry hall. The effect is enchanting; at intermission a number of patrons were heard to say they’d go back again just to see the video."

PNB unveils Seattle’s new, brighter ‘Nutcracker’ 11/29/2015

The Times reviews The Nutcracker and gives a nod to the team at Straightface Studios:

"A magical mood is established straightaway with a video (from local firm Straightface Studios) playing over Tchaikovsky’s delicate overture: We’re whisked, possibly by flying reindeer, over a snowy New England forest and into a mid-19th-century town, up to a warmly lit home."

PNB unveils Seattle’s new, brighter ‘Nutcracker’ Pacific Northwest Ballet’s new “Nutcracker,” designed by illustrator Ian Falconer with choreography by George Balanchine, is brighter and lighter.
