Today is World Wildlife Day! An excellent opportunity to look back on the ways that wildlife has been beautifully represented in carpets and textiles, as demonstrated in many HALI issues over the years.
The 'Common Thread' feature in HALI 209 from 2021 discussed the various ways in which crocodiles have been depicted in textiles across the world and how they convey different messages of power and potency, danger and devotion.
One of the featured textiles is the above display cloth, ndop, Wukari, Nigeria, early to mid-20th century, from the . It was in all likelihood made for export to a noble patron in neighbouring Cameroon, where such textiles were and are still used on important state and ceremonial occasions, often as backdrops during a royal appearance. The two depicted crocodiles have royal connotations and beside them is a charming leopard with curly claws. You can find other crocodiles and many more creatures in textiles by purchasing a subscription of HALI that will grant you access to the complete digital HALI archive since 1978.

In compliance with our Governor's order to “Shelter at Home”, we are closed through April 3, 2020 when the mandate will be re-evaluated by state officials.
