One Reel
One Reel Celebrates Music, Arts & Creativity.
Founded in 1972, One Reel fuels civic pride through signature experiences that foster growth and development in community and the arts. We connect audiences with diverse and progressive arts and cultural ideas through access and opportunities that would otherwise not exist. Our projects have included Bumbershoot, Family 4th at Lake Union, City of Music Career Day, Emerald City Search, Teatro ZinZa
No one was more surprised to learn that One Reel was selected to be honored at the Washington State Governor's Arts & Heritage Awards presentation this fall then we were!
This is both a huge honor and an incredible validation for the work One Reel has accomplished over the past couple of challenging years. Through our ART SAVES ME program, One Reel was among the first organizations to step up to (safely) produce a indoor public exhibit in the fall of 2020 with the COVID HOUSE OF HORRORS, More recently, One Reel found new success though the launch of PUBLIC DISPLAY ( https://publicdisplay.art/ ), the free arts-focused publication we started publishing in 2021 to encourage arts exploration among residents & visitors and to recognize the work of local artists, when they needed it most.
Public Display, in particular, has allowed One Reel to emerge from the pandemic with a renewed purpose, serving as a champion on behalf of Seattle's creative community.
Yet, this award is a well-timed reminder of the lasting legacy that One Reel has left on the Pacific Northwest ever since the organization's inception in 1972 — as a troupe of traveling vaudeville performers who entertained regional audiences from the back of a transformed 1931 Model A truck.
Between then and now, there have been scores of contributors who have made the impossible, possible. The organization's leader, Norm Langill, was the driving force behind One Reel's greatest successes during the lion's share of the last five decades, which included Seattle's iconic Bumbershoot Festival, as well as WOMAD USA, Summer nIghts at the Pier, Teatro Zinzanni, and Family 4th, to name a few.
This well-deserved award recognizes the accomplishments of Norm and the army Samaritans who have contributed to One Reel's legacy over the last five decades and is a fitting tribute to honor One Reel's 50th anniversary of creating magic and memories for Washington residents.
Thank you, Governor Inslee!
It's baaaaack!
Where do you think we will be this weekend? Yep!
For tickets and info go to: https://seattleartfair.com
See ya there!
We encourage you to stop by Pound Arts during Capitol Hill Block Party this week to check out our PRIDE on Public Display exhibit!
It's the first part of the promotion that will spill onto the streets of Seattle this week — as we distribute the work of six talented LGBTQ+ artists who have created all new works to share their PRIDE with Seattle.
The artists and a limited supply of posters will be on hand for folks who stop by.
And you can pick up the 3rd issue of PublicDisplay.ART — hot off the presses, too! The issue features profiles of each of the PRIDE on Public Display artists and we the issue sports one of the poster designs on the cover. That would be Kelly Bjork's work, and we couldn't be happier to feature it on the cover and in poster form to celebrate Pride with Seattle.

Seattle Artist, Christin Call, is seeking submissions for a new crowd-sourced project she's working on (see photos for her current CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS info).

I am sure we echo all the other arts organizations who have benefited through Randy Engstrom's leadership, when we say "THANK YOU!" to Randy for all his work on behalf of the arts in Seattle.
At the beginning of 2021, Randy Engstrom, will leave his position as our director to spend more time with his family and advocate nationally for arts and racial justice.
“It has been the honor of my career to lead the Office of Arts & Culture for the past 8 years," Randy says. "To every artist and cultural worker in Seattle and the vast, brilliant, and resilient cultural sector in our region: you are the center of all of the work we do.”
Until a new director is appointed by the Mayor, our Deputy Director Calandra Childers will serve as the interim director for the Office. Learn more and join us in celebrating Randy for his time leading our office.
