This poem revisits Yeats’ earlier “The Old Pensioner,” originally published in 1890. While the the earlier version was a fictitious account of a man nearing the end of his life, “Lamentation” brought in the poet’s own life experience. The poem follows a speaker who mourns his lost youth and examines the way he has been changed by the passage of time.

Did you know that this manuscript was found among the queen's effects around 1630, almost three decades after her death. The poem was likely written around 1582, at the time of the collapse of her marriage negotiations with the Duke of Anjou. It reflects the speaker's grief at the end of an unsuccessful love affair.
