Larger-than-life leaders get a lot of attention, but those who focus on more subtle details by being vulnerable and creating a positive culture of collective responsibility with a focus on manageable workloads will have more long-term success, writes psychologist, author and consultant Kathy Miller Perkins. "So, the next time the drumbeat of 'go big or go home' echoes in your ears, remember: True leadership might flourish in the nuances -- the understated, the straightforward and the elements often deemed trivial," Miller Perkins writes.
Larger-Than-Life Leadership Is Dangerous: Adopt Small But Powerful Actions Instead The draw of a singular, charismatic leader engaging in grand gestures to save the organization remains strong, most likely due to the model’s simplicity.

What Leaders Really Do Leadership is different from management, but not for the reasons most people think. Leadership isn’t mystical and mysterious. It has nothing to do with having “charisma” or other exotic personality traits. It is not the province of a chosen few. Nor is leadership necessarily better than manage...

"At the end of the day, leaders would find it very challenging to lead and solve big problems alone if they don't deeply listen, empathize, and truly want to do good and then synthesize it all together," Gutman says.
What Is Sapient Leadership? Ron Gutman’s Call for More Humility, Empathy, and Collaboration To Navigate ‘Three-Dimensional Change’ Ron Gutman says the era of the “superhero” leader is over. Ask these 3 questions when a crisis arises -- Leaders are more effective during a crisis when they are listening to diverse voices from the boardroom to the front line and using that input to improve communication across the board, write Erika James, dean of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and Lynn Perry Wooten, president of Simmons University. "How you fare in the next crisis, whether you fail to contain the damage or realize the opportunities to emerge more resilient than before, will depend on the agency of your leadership," they write.
In a Crisis, Great Leaders Prioritize Listening Since 2020, leaders have had to navigate large changes and crises whose effects, especially without proper crisis leadership, are still being felt today.
