Old Log Cabin
Seattle based distillery carrying on the legacy of Old Log Cabin Bourbon Whiskey We got a great reception, so we started searching for a building in Seattle.
Batch 206 began life in Oregon at House Spirits in 2009. “We wanted to know what a small craft distillery could do” says Steichen, “We formulated our gin and vodka with them and marketed the brands for about two years to see if it would work. What we found is perfect for what we need: an urban footprint, front and back loading doors, parking for customers, close to our supporters.” In March of 201

Roy Olmstead and his wife, Elsie, operated radio station KFQX out of their Mount Baker home in 1924. On her “Aunt Vivian” show, Elsie read bedtime stories to kids. An urban legend, never proved, claims she sent coded messages to Roy’s bootlegging partners during the program. Roy and Elsie sold the station in 1925, after Roy had been arrested. It was Seattle’s first radio station and eventually would become KOMO. (Museum of History & Industry) 🥃
Establishing the Olmstead Syndicate, Roy Olmstead capitalized on his knowledge of law enforcement tactics to create a sophisticated network of suppliers, distributors, and speakeasy operators across Seattle and beyond. His operations extended from Canada, where liquor was smuggled into the United States via various covert methods, to local speakeasies that flourished under his patronage. One of Olmstead’s top customers at the time was John Henry “Doc” Hamilton, who operated his first speakeasy in Seattle’s Central District neighborhood. Hamilton’s speakeasy was quickly closed down by police, but he would later open his popular drinking establishment, Doc Hamilton’s Barbecue Pit. Despite the name, it was a fancy dinner club with an elegant and stylish interior that many have since compared to Harlem’s Cotton Club.

Happy 4th of July from our family at Old Log Cabin Distillery to yours! 🇺🇸 Raise a glass and celebrate! Cheers to freedom, fun, and great spirits! 🥃🎇
Roy Olmstead’s journey from upstanding police officer to notorious bootlegger is a testament to the allure and contradictions of Prohibition-era America. A former lieutenant in the Seattle Police Department, Olmstead initially enforced Prohibition laws before succumbing to the lucrative temptations of the illegal liquor trade. His transformation from law enforcer to one of Seattle’s most successful bootleggers is a reflection of the era’s blurred moral boundaries and economic opportunities.

Seattle’s history during Prohibition is a tapestry woven with tales of defiance, innovation, and clandestine operations. At the heart of this narrative lies Roy Olmstead, a figure whose name became synonymous with bootlegging in the Pacific Northwest. His story not only illuminates Seattle’s underground economy during the 1920s but also underscores the complexities of law enforcement and societal attitudes towards alcohol. Follow along as we tell the ledendary story.

Happy National Bourbon Day !!! Legend has it that before E.G. Booz made Old Log Cabin, bourbon was first produced by Reverend Elijah Craig in the late 1780s. He was using old fish barrels to store his spirits and not surprisingly, fish-flavored wood did not enhance the whiskey’s taste, so Craig started purifying the white-oak barrels by charring the inside. He stamped the barrels with their county of origin (Bourbon County) and sent them on a 90-day joureny down to New Orleans. The charred oak and three-month travel time combined to mellow the whiskey and give it a smooth, smoky, oaky flavor. When New Orleanians requested more of “that whiskey from Bourbon,” the name and the spirit were born. 🥃 +

What is a tax strip and why is it on the cap of my whiskey? Tax strips are the bits of paper that were affixed over the cap/cork to indicate that the tax had been paid and the bottle had not been tampered with. Red strips denote federal tax, blue strips are for export, and green strips denote bottled in bond. They are helpful to us in determining the age of vintage Old Log Cabin Whiskey bottles. The use of tax strips over the cap began after the Bottled in Bond Act in 1897 and ended with The Tax Reform Act of 1984. +

Welcome to Batch 206
Batch 206 Distillery is owned and operated by Jeff & Daleen Steichen. Prior to opening Batch 206 Distillery, Jeff owned one of the top 10 music venues in the United States for over 20 years and has a long history of owning and operating bars and restaurants in the Pacific NW. After selling “others people’s booze” for most of his professional career, Jeff became fascinated with the blossoming world of craft distilling. When the laws changed in Washington State in 2008, which made opening a craft distillery accessible, the idea for Batch 206 Distillery was born.
Batch 206 began life in Oregon at House Spirits in 2009. “We wanted to know what a small craft distillery could do” says Steichen, “We formulated our gin and vodka with them and marketed the brands for about two years to see if it would work. We got a great reception, so we started searching for a building in Seattle. What we found is perfect for what we need: an urban footprint, front and back loading doors, parking for customers, close to our supporters.” In March of 2012, all production was moved to our new 8,000 square foot facility located in the heart of Seattle, WA.
Out of more than 130 licensed distilleries in the state of Washington, we are one of the top 5 production facilities in the state. Batch 206 Distillery is a true small batch artisan facility. We produce our products on a 1,000 liter, handmade German Kothe still. You can find our products in 20 states nationally and internationally in Singapore, Hong Kong and parts of Canada.
Our brands currently include:
• Barrel Rested ‘Old Tom’ Counter Gin (Gold Medal, 2015 American Craft Spirits Association)
• Counter Gin (91 points, “One of 11 Must Try American Gins”, Wine Enthusiast, July 2014)
• Batch 206 Vodka (Gold Medal, 2014 SF World Spirits Competition)
• Batch 206 100 Proof Mad Mint Vodka (Rated A- by Drinkhacker.com)
• Barrel Raider Straight Bourbon Whiskey (89 Points, Highly Recommended, 2014 BTI)
• See 7 Stars Moonshine, 100 Proof Original and 90 Proof Flavors Apple Pie, Cherry Pie and Peach Pie
(Best White Dog Whiskey - Sip Magazine, Best of the NW, 2014)
While Batch 206 Distillery brands are enjoying success in many markets and will continue to be a substantial part of our portfolio in the future, we have also been barreling our unique style of Bourbon since we opened our doors 3 years ago. Look for it’s release in the fall of 2015!
