The team at Pure Watercraft is excited to finally share this new, streamlined version of our Pure Outboard. We increased its efficiency with an improved gear set design, and its longevity with direct passive cooling of the gear set in the water. We also dramatically reduced the size of the outboard above the water to make it look as subtle as it sounds. There's a lot more to watch and check out on our updated website.

The Ocean Cleanup is preparing for launch, and we decided to take a look for ourselves and help others get out to see it from our electric water taxi (powered by the Pure Outboard). I took the SF-Alameda ferry to get there (which by the way is a much more beautiful way to get across the Bay than crowded into a tube), Ed drove the boat down from our home base in Seattle.

Boyan Slat started this project when he was 17, launching with a Kickstarter, and since then has raised millions of dollars to realize his vision. The idea is a 600m boom (actually 62 of them) positioned in the Pacific Garbage Patch, to concentrate the debris so that it can be collected using conventional nets. The booms are solely wind and wave powered, so they go downwind, with the concave side leading the way. Their raised profile makes them travel faster than the surface water, and they have 2-3m deep screens hanging below them, so they collect and concentrate the debris in the center. Recently-added stabilizers keep them from turning over as the top side heats up, and a solar power system powers running lights, satellite comms, and WiFi between the components. The Netherlands issued a flag, the first time an unmanned blue-water vessel has received a national flag.

They've already tested a short section in rough water, but this is the first test of a completed boom in its target configuration. It'll go 250 miles offshore and see how it works.

The UK-developed AutoNav vessel is used for autonomous data collection (similar to SailDrone).

On the way home, our truck was blocked by the I-5 closure due to the fires that jumped the freeway near Dunsmuir, CA, where Ed had to navigate an alternative route through the mountains, with trailer and water taxi behind. (About 18 semi trucks were abandoned, some of which were burned up in the fire.)

It's incredible how high the quality of printed parts is now. We can use them for simple tools, and even alpha/beta level parts.
