Ingraham Rocketry
Our goal is to help students develop skills, interest, and confidence in STEM fields through teamwork and leadership via the safe practicing of rocketry.
We are a student-run group of high schoolers from Ingraham High School. We meet at lunch and sometimes outside of school. The club was started in 2006 with a Chemistry/Physics teacher and small group of high schoolers, and has grown and developed since. We design, build, and fly rockets in the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC). In the past, we have also built and flown rockets through NASA's Student Launch Initiative (SLI) program.
The theme for Ingraham Rocketry's TARC competition this year was resilience. The students got through several setbacks (random left turns! rocket recovered from the river!) and made it to national competition again. The best example was an unfortunate crash last weekend--11 days before departing for Nationals. Within a week, students had laid up a new carbon-fiber tube, fixed the damage, and flown the rocket on test flights.
Next weekend is nationals, and we're all so excited! (Photo is of 4/9 team members)
It's been a long, crazy COVID year, and Ingraham Rocketry is headed for TARC Nationals in Pasco this weekend! Good luck to our students! https://www.geekwire.com/2021/seattle-area-students-flying-high-6-teams-will-compete-american-rocketry-challenge/
Seattle-area students flying high again as 6 teams will compete in American Rocketry Challenge Finals for the world's largest student rocket contest will kick off this weekend with 100 teams competing to become national champion — and six of the teams are from the Seattle area.
Once again, Ingraham Rocketry missed the TARC finals by one place. So close, and so very far away. And now we start thinking about next year...
There was a surprise break in the weather forecast for Sunday, so we are launching again! Meet at the auto shop at 9:00, leaving at 9:30, planning to be back at Ingraham at 2:00. AV bay team meets at 8:00 for a few repairs.
Ingraham Rocketry will be launching at 60 Acres on Sunday. We're getting to the field at about 10:45 and will stay for 2 hours or so.
Ingraham Rocketry doesn't just build rockets--the students scratch-build all of their parachutes for Team America Rocketry Challenge too!
Thank you to Blue Origin for the amazing tour on Monday! The students were so excited to see hardware that is headed for space soon!
Ingraham Rocketry will be flying the TARC testbed rocket on Saturday, testing the on-board controls! Fingers crossed for good flights!
Ingraham Rocketry had a great Memorial Day weekend of flying. Two students earned high power rocketry certifications, and Project Silver Star flew supersonic twice, to a little over 10,000 feet and a little over 13,000 feet.
Thanks to Eli for the pictures!
Ingraham Rocketry's Project Silver Star had its shakedown flight on a cloudy afternoon in Mansfield, WA on Sunday. It was powered by 1596 Newton-seconds of Red Lightning goodness to 7,951 feet above ground, and returned safely to earth two minutes later. Everything worked perfectly, so we are on track for a big motor, 12,000 feet, and Mach 1.2 on Memorial Day weekend!
Here's the team out at Mansfield before launch and walking back after recovery.
Ingraham Rocketry is currently #1 on the alternates list for TARC finals. If one team that qualified drops out, we will go to Nationals!
While we're biting our nails waiting, we are planning the first flight for Project Silver Star. We are planning to launch on Sunday April 15 in suburban Mansfield, WA, about 4 hours drive from Seattle. If the weather doesn't look good for Sunday, we will launch on Friday April 13 instead. Either way, we will leave Seattle about 8am and plan to be launching by 1pm.
Thanks to System Three Resins for sponsoring us!
Ingraham Rocketry took advantage of a late change in the weather to get our last scoring flights in for both teams. Unfortunately, one of the teams had some bad luck and is out of contention for TARC Nationals. The other team is on the edge of qualifying. We will find out for sure April 6. Fingers crossed!
This is what our team rockets look like after a lot of flying. It's a hard life!
More launches! Meet at the auto shop on Wednesday immediately after school (2:35). We need to be snappy because we need to leave 60 Acres by 5:15. Sunday launch meeting at the auto shop at 10am unless stated otherwise.
It looks like the weather will cooperate for a TARC launch this weekend. It will probably be on Sunday, but we will update here with the date and time.
We had a beautiful flying day at 60 Acres yesterday. The new TARC rockets are in full paint and showing off their custom-built carbon fiber fins.
After school launch on Wednesday, meet at the auto shop right after the bell. Looks like we are good for a launch on Sunday as well, time TBD.
There will be a 60 Acres launch on Saturday December 30. Meet at noon at the auto shop to prep.
There will be a 60 Acres launch and a build on Sunday starting at noon, running until about 3:00. Meet at the Ingraham auto shop.
Kira gives two thumbs up to the hand-laid carbon fiber tubes for Project Silver Star. Next stop, lots of sanding and finishing.
Thank you to System Three Resins for the tour Friday and the care package of epoxy and supplies! The team didn't waste any time putting it to good use. They laid up the first test piece of carbon fiber tube for Project Silver Star on Sunday.
This year's Ingraham Rocketry poster is pretty awesome.
Hey everyone! Stop by Central Market in Shoreline 10-4 on Saturday to see Ingraham Rocketry at their latest site sale. While you're there, check out the giant pumpkin weigh-off!
We'll have at least one more site sale after this one, also at Central Market on Saturday October 14.
We are launching at 60 Acres Park in the morning on Friday, October 13, time TBA. We probably won't get the TARC rockets in the air, but there are several student-built rockets that we'll fly.
Ingraham Rocketry's first site sale is this weekend! Stop by Ace Hardware in Maple Leaf on Saturday 10-4 to see a selection of our rockets and maybe even buy a Chinook Book to support the program.
Ingraham Rocketry has been busy over the summer. They've built and flown a testbed rocket for the Team America Rocketry Competition. None of the flights were 100% successful, but the team learned a lot and is refining the design for a new testbed.
Ingraham won't be participating in the NASA Student Launch project this year, but they will still build a large rocket to fly in Eastern Washington in May. Project Silver Star will have a hand-laid carbon-fiber tube and will go to around 12,000 feet and Mach 1.4!
Rocking the house at the Ingraham Welcome Wagon last night!
Jim Wilkerson had some nice pictures from Fire in The Sky last weekend. Check out the flame as Project Shuksan launches!
Hey everyone! GiveBig is just around the corner. While the students do a lot of fundraising, any little bit you can contribute helps as well! We use the money for rocket parts, motors, travel costs, and travel scholarships for team members who need them.
