KapKa Cooperative School is an independent elementary school serving grades K-5 in Seattle, WA.
Kapka is a welcoming and inclusive community of children, teachers, and parents who see learning as a life-long and cooperative process. Our goal is to help children become capable and responsible individuals who believe in themselves, respect the views of others, follow their passions, and contribute to their world. We are a creative, joyful community, strong in our shared philosophy, rich in learning and play.
KapKa Cooperative Elementary School students, ranging from kindergarten to 5th grade, ran 230 miles total (!!) and raised $8678 to support local non-profit organization Long Live the Kings. KapKa believes that the greatest impact comes with collective effort, and we are honored to share our support with Long Live the Kings!

We can't get enough of celebrating our fifth graders this week!
A few days ago, this incredible group returned from a backpacking trip in the mountains with Teacher Laurel and Teacher Becca. At the summit, they celebrated their growth, strengths, and friendships, as they looked forward to their futures beyond KapKa.
We couldn't be prouder of all they accomplished as individuals and as a group last week on this big adventure!!

KapKa Cooperative School students participated in our annual Jogathon last week to raise money for Long Live the Kings (.kings) whose mission is to "restore wild salmon and steelhead and support sustainable fishing in the Pacific Northwest." Our runners, if they ran all their laps relay-style - would have run from KapKa all the way just past Whistler, Canada!!!
LLTK was founded in 1986 to help decision-makers advance salmon recovery while balancing the needs of fish and people. Their work is integral to the Survive the Sound educational program that KapKa and other area schools use to expand knowledge and understanding of the life-cycle of salmon in our region.
Money raised through our Jogathon will help Long Live the Kings with their current work unraveling a mystery of why salmon and steelhead are recently encountering high mortality rates when they enter the salt waters of the Salish Sea. They have created the Salish Sea Marine Survival Project, in collaboration with tribes, academia, non-profits, and international, federal, and state agencies.
Thank you for your support for KapKa students, and for helping to support this important organization that connects directly into our education and our community!

The 4th and 5th Grade Trailblazers have been hard at work designing, prepping, and planting around KapKa as part of their environmental education studies. They've been planting native PNW flowers and plants around the school and it is looking beautiful! Thank you for your generous donation of soil and the nice discount on the raised bed soil. They've been put to good use!

A week ago, KapKa families headed home from beautiful Orcas Island, where they gathered for the annual family camp weekend at Camp Orkila. The weather was perfect and KapKa kids explored camp, ziplined, made new connections, rode bikes, performed at the Talent Show, and more... Such a fun time and a great way to connect with families, alumni, and the incredible natural beauty of Orcas Island. Those who were up late were fortunate to catch the Northern Lights! What a weekend!

Yesterday was a sunny day at Carkeek Park, and the KapKa kids released close to 230 salmon into the imprint pond with well-wishes and music to accompany them on their way. This culminates an environmental education unit that spans the grades and combines academics, the arts, and lots of heart - in true KapKa spirit. Thank you to everyone who helped our Salmon make it - from eggs at the bottom of our tank, to thriving fry preparing for their next journey.

This year we hosted our annual Young Writers Conference here at KapKa for our 2nd - 5th grade authors and illustrators. As part of the event, we were so excited to welcome local author and illustrator Sanae Ishida to KapKa! Sanae has written a number of wonderful children's books, including Little Kunoichi, the Ninja Girl, and Ba-Chan, the Ninja Grandma.
Our young writers were mesmerized and inspired by her presentation about her experiences and processes as an author and illustrator- complete with live demonstrations and a custom, crowd-sourced illustration!
In addition to Sanae's presentation, 2nd - 5th grade students gathered to share their own published books in small group writers circles and share compliments. It was a truly special event and we look forward to continuing to grow this tradition into the future!
Thank you for visiting KapKa, !

"It was amazing looking around the school earlier this week - every way we turned the school was buzzing with life and with the reason our school exists - connected community through learning. Students were so proud to show you around their classroom and their work.
We are so grateful for this community, and especially grateful for the opportunities to celebrate the experiential learning your student does here at KapKa each day."

"We chose Kapka for its small class sizes and playful learning styles, but soon discovered the dozens of reasons why Kapka is a magical place to be a kid.
At Kapka, every child is known, and their uniqueness celebrated. We see our child's confidence growing weekly and her enjoyment of school has skyrocketed.
As a parent volunteer, spending time with the kids and teachers is a highlight in my week. I marvel at the staff and teachers' ability to connect with the students, I'm inspired by their patience and I'm grateful for their presence in my child's life."
