Mining History - From Prague to Praag

Born & bred in the Netherlands, Judith van Praag’s ancestors hailed from former Czecho-Slovakia.

From backstage to on stage. Judith started out as set, costume & prop designer for primarily multicultural theater companies. Eventually her interest shifted to the literary aspects of the theater, and to being on, rather than backstage.

Judith received a grant from the Amsterdam Council for the Arts for Man in Space/ The Estranger, a musical/ art installation and spoken word performance that premiered in Amsterdam. A Prince Bernhard Foundation travel grant allowed her to accept the position of guest artist/performer and lecturer at the Fine Arts Department, and the School of Architecture at U.T. at Austin. At the end of her stay she presented a poetry performance with two musicians, Marvin King† and Gary Davis at The Chicago House. The Austin Writers' League named her Traveling Poet of 1994 following her immigration.

Following loss of first born lead to grief writing, initially for support group publications. In 1999 she published the memoir "Creative Acts of Healing: after a baby dies." Essays, reviews and articles related to loss, grief and healing are still available at Ouders Online, a Dutch web magazine for parents. Responses to her column "Once a Mother Always a Mother" made her feel she'd become the Ann Landers of Grief.

Judith leads workshops in writing as a creative act of healing for people of all walks of life. Starting in 2004, writing about Art Etc. for The International Examiner, and presenting architectural tours at the Seattle Central Public Library helped this 2G Holocaust Survivor, member of the diaspora find her footing in the Pacific Northwest.

After her mother’s death late 2002, family matters came into focus. Freed from her parents’ war time induced need for secrecy, Judith purged memories, from early childhood, MG and YA to present day experiences as mental health advocate. The result, a first draft for a screenplay, based on Forgiveness a historical novel. Set in post-WWII the Netherlands Judith paints her parents’ tumultuous love story, and her father’s development as professional artist. Then there’s the story of growing up with traumatized WWI & WWII survivors, and the one of a precautious teen “given away” to a nine year older man and finding “her America”. And last but not least there’s the discovery of family members dead and alive thanks to the Internet.

Delving in family history can be a sheer endless enterprise. At times Judith the author finds it hard to see the trees for the forest. She handles delete like an axe, creating a clearing from which stories may be told, from center stage.
