We offer an extensive healthy selection of both freshwater and saltwater organisms, quality equipment to keep them alive, and excellent, up to date information for any level of aquarist.
We received a shipment of plants out of Asia almost two weeks ago and they are looking great! Featured here are some Anubias varieties, swords and other exotics, and Mayaca. There are even more plants around the shop for all lighting levels, so swing by and see what will work in your tank.
We received a saltwater shipment a little over a week ago and everything has settled in nicely. Some highlights shown here include a lined puffer, scopas tang, firefish, and red scooter blenny. There are even more shrimps, snails, and corals to choose from around the shop. Swing by and check them out!
We received a nice shipment of freshwater animals just over a week ago and wanted to show you some of the highlights. Pictured here are blind cave tetras, clouded archers, red lizard catfish (L10A), Madagascar rainbows, and frogmouth catfish. These animals are all looking great and ready for new homes.
Just a heads up about a temporary schedule change. We will be opening at 11:00am today and should be back to normal operating hours next Saturday. See you then!!!
Today is the day and now is the time! We have many pounds of candy to give away to kids in costume and the adults escorting them. Actually, anybody can come get some really! Happy Halloween!!!
No, the photos aren’t great, but the frags are. We received a big selection of over 200 new frags and the look fantastic. Also, a vast majority of them are in the $24.98-$34.98 range. And, yes, we still have our buy three and get one of equal or lesser value for free sale going on. They’ve already started moving and will probably start going faster soon. Get them while you can!!!
Yes, those are pea puffers. Yes, we have already sold some straight out of the bucket. No, we don’t do holds. We’ll see you when you get here.
Do you like hardscape? Because we have hardscape! For the first time in a few years our legendary rock guy has just brought us a half ton of assorted stuff like rainbow sandstone, war paint slate, obsidian, zebra rock, amazonite, and travertine. There was also a bunch more red lava rock, slate, old coral skeleton, and petrified wood too! AND this is all on top of the tremendous rock selection we already had. If you’re looking to set up a new tank or redecorate an old one or even know someone who wants to then you have to come by and check these out! There are some really unique formations that probably won’t last long.
If you have nuisance anemones like Aiptasia in your saltwater tank then you may want to pick up some peppermint shrimp. They are great at consume the nasty cniderians and acting as scavengers for excess food in the tank. As an added bonus, since they are synchronous hermaphrodites, a pair can fertilize each other’s eggs and produce larvae that are a nutritious food source for corals and other small animals in the tank. We have a pretty good number in stock right now, so there should be plenty for everyone.
Here’s our attempt at a bit of bathroom humor. 😄
It is also the truth. 😉
Since there has been a fair amount of interest in the small palludariums we have set up in the past, we have decided to bring in a selection of the tanks for folks who may want to try to design and build their own. They each come with a screen top, locking front doors, and a WATERPROOF bottom section. The foam background can be left in or removed, whichever you prefer and we have many equipment and decorative options for customizing your setup.
There are less than three hours left for you to use this coupon. If you don’t have one then you can ask to sign up for the coupons and you can use it. Oh, and it is also useable for aquariums and kits if you’re looking for any of those. Remember, it’s only good for today.
Ok, everyone! Today is the day to use this coupon to help celebrate Porter’s Birthday. You can get an additional 15% off of your entire purchase, including items purchased with other coupons or discounts for military service and GSAS membership! Just one Birthday coupon per purchase, please. Remember, this coupon is no longer valid after we close today at 9:00pm.
Looks like someone’s planning another quiet Sunday evening in Lake City. Be there or be POUNDED INTO THE GROUND!!! Just kidding. It should be a lot of fun seeing folks in cool masks blowing off some steam. The mayhem will take place just down the other side of the street from our parking lot. We hope to see you there.
Today is the big day!!! The Lake City Summer Festival is about to kick off and it’s going to be a blast. Everything starts at 10:30 and there will be vendors, bands (catch Anger Management at 11:00am), and other performers. The Parade will start at 6:00 pm. Be mindful of parking. The streets are already starting to be shut down, so traffic may be tight. The Fish Store will be open normal hours today. Have fun!
We received a few Mayan Butterfly Koi this week. We’re not quite sure what makes them Mayan and their definitely not shy, but those fins and colors sure are pretty. We only have a few, so get them while you can!
We have dwarf seahorses.
Sorry, the note was copied and not pasted the other day. It is now commented on the previous post and listed below. This is the same advice that has been posted in previous years.
I (Dan) just wanted to share with you what I do to help combat heat waves at my house.
1) Keep all of the windows open all night long to release hot air from the house and allow cool air in. I would run box fans and the bathroom vents to speed up the air exchange rate.
2) Each morning, around 6:30-7:00, I would turn off the bathroom vents and close all of the windows to trap the cool air inside and close the blinds on all of the windows that had them. I covered any windows without blinds (like skylights) with butcher paper. Newspaper or construction paper could work as well.
3) I filled both of my bath tubs with cold water and elevated a box fan to blow across each tub at full power. This accomplished two things: A) it kept the water in the tubs circulating so that new cool water was always interacting with the air and B) it moved the cooler air out of the bathroom. Circulating the water in the tub is important so that you avoid a layering effect with the surface warming up and then preventing the deeper water from absorbing heat from the air.
4) I used a third box fan and two smaller fans to move air throughout my house.
While this wasn’t a perfect cooling system, it can keep my house 10-20 degrees cooler that the outside (20 degrees in the bathrooms and 10 degrees in the living room and kitchen). Yes, parts of my house still get very hot, but that’s not as bad as outside. The cooler internal temperature also made it easier to cool the house further each night.
I had done something similar to this over 20 years ago with a single bed room and moved air across a sweater box filled with ice. It’s essentially a swamp cooler, but a lot less expensive.
After what I feel to be repeated success, I am confident enough to pass this information on for any and all of you to use. The heat we have seen in the past will probably be back and I want everyone to be able to handle it. Good luck.
It’s time for some Summer Fun again! The Lake City Festival and Parade is taking place on August 3rd this year. That’s a Saturday, so most of you should be available to check it out and have a blast!!! Things should get started around 10:30am with three different parades starting at 6:00pm and everything wrapping up by 9:30pm. Feel free to swing by and say hello at The Fish Store when you are in attendance.
It’s time to talk temperature again, so here’s our annual repost of ways to keep your tank and you cool. By the way, The Fish Store doesn’t go above 81F and you are always welcome to swing by to cool off a bit.
What’s a better way to celebrate Independence Day than by eating…a lot. By the way, the frozen silverside (defrosted) was as long as the frog fish. Yes, we are closed. Have a happy Independence Day!
We still have two systems used here at The Fish Store for sale. Tank, wet-dry filter, pump, and hoses are included. We have an 80 gallon and a 40 gallon system left. Get them while you can!
Two important notes for today:
1) The new landlord is having the building repainted and work is going on around our back door. You should still be able to come in, but just be aware if the painter, the lack of parking spots, and the wet paint.
2) We are closing today at 5:00pm in observance of the Memorial Day holiday.
In our continuing minor remodel, we have four large acrylic aquariums (2x155 gallons and 2x180 gallons) to give away. All four had been used as saltwater mixing vats; the two smaller ones in Bellevue and then Seattle. The larger tanks predate the 1993 fire at The Fish Store and have some smoke discoloration. All of these tanks have holes drilled into them and some include pvc fittings. They are yours if you can find a way to get them home.
We have two small refrigerators that we need to get get rid of. They are old, but still work well. They served us well for many years hold staff lunches and snacks and are now cleaned out. The cart is not for sale. 😉
