After the WA Supreme Court ruled unanimously that a prosecutor in Grant County committed race-based misconduct at trial before the jurors, it threw out Mr. Zamora’s convictions. This is a case where the accused was walking to his niece’s home, when a call came in from a neighbor about a suspected car prowler. Mr. Zamora was tased, kicked, beaten, pepper sprayed, and hogtied by the police and had to be resuscitated by medics. And no there was not more to the story that justified conduct of the police.

Now, Mr. Zamora is being charged again by the same prosecutors office despite already having served the maximum penalty allowed by law.

Do not ignore your jury summons or try to get out of it, please. It is a privilege and our civic duty to ensure there is justice in our courts.

I am proud of our State Supreme Court in deciding today that prosecutors who commit race based misconduct will be held accountable. In this recent case, a prosecutor in Grant County asked jurors about undocumented immigrants and border crossing during jury selection, appealing to their racial biases intentionally. Unfortunately this happens way too often not only in other states, but our very own. Just because someone is charged with a crime, it does not mean they did it. Share these news with anyone who could benefit. What a lot of people don’t know is that ignoring tickets can ultimately lead to a license suspension. Which can turn into criminal charges for driving with a suspended license. So proud of my city for offering this program!

Starting this week, Seattle Municipal Court offers hearings for people who are low-income and can’t afford to pay their debt from overdue Seattle parking, traffic, or camera tickets. These hearings are an opportunity for participants to speak with a court magistrate and request to reduce their debt and remove tickets from collections.

Hearings will be held by phone every Thursday starting at 11 AM. Sign up online or by calling (206) 684-8747, Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM- 4 PM.
