Jane Domestic
Tools for every cook's kitchen. It marked the beginning of my love for cooking. Today, I find I don't need a lot of gadgets but only a few essential tools.
I'll never forget my first job in the kitchen, when my mom taught me to make the simple, iconic crisscross mark with a fork on peanut butter cookies. For the Suede Mitt, I made one tool from two: it's both a hot pad and an oven mitt, with the bulkiness of a quilted oven mitt stripped away. It still protects the most tender parts of the arm but offers a steadier, more pliable grip. I hope the Suede Mitt becomes a tool you'll reach for every day!

I made these for family dinner yesterday! Yum. Here’s the recipe:
Vermicelli Sesame Noodles
1/4 c. Sesame oil
1/4 c. Black soy sauce
2 T. Sugar
1 T. Sriracha
2 T. Balsamic vinegar
11/2 lbs. Vermicelli, dry
1/2 c. Sesame seeds, toasted
1 c. Green onions, thinly sliced
In a large bowl, whisk together sesame oil, soy sauce, sugar, sriracha, and vinegar. Cook pasta one minute less than directions call for. Drain, rinse with cold water, and drain again. With you hands, immediately toss the pasta with the dressing, making sure pasta is completely and evenly coated. Chill at least four hours; mix once.
Add seeds and continue folding dressing through out the pasta. Remove to a shallow platter, top with green onions, and serve at room temperature.
My favorite get well gift is a classic red tin I buy at my local hardware store filled with a mini sized dessert of their choice. In this case, chocolate brownies were requested!
The Cooks Illustrated Oatmeal Raisin recipe calls for nutmeg. I tried it and will use cinnamon next time! 😉
Perfect weather for a salad! Use whatever you have in the fridge — you may be surprised at what you come up with! 🥗

German Chocolate Cake
(recipe from Hersey Cocoa Tin)
Ingredients:
1/4 cup Hershey’s Cocoa
1/2 cup boiling water
1 cup butter or margarine, plus 3 tablespoons, softened
2 - 1/4 cups sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
4 eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup buttermilk or sour milk*
pecan halves
Coconut Pecan Frosting
1 can sweetened condensed milk (14 oz) (not evaporated milk)
3 egg yolks, slightly beaten
1/2 cup butter (1 stick)
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 - 1/3 cups sweetened coconut flakes
1 cup pecans chopped
Heat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour three 9-inch round baking pans.
Stir together cocoa and water in small bowl until smooth; set aside. Beat butter, sugar and vanilla in large bowl until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir together flour, baking soda and salt; add to butter mixture alternately with chocolate mixture and buttermilk, beating just enough to blend. Pour batter into prepared pans.
Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until top springs back when touched lightly. Cool 5 minutes; remove from pans to wire racks. Cool completely. Prepare Coconut Pecan Frosting; spread between layers and over top.
Tip
Cake can also be baked in 13 x 9 pan @ 350 F. for 45 to 50 minutes or until top springs back when touched.
Coconut Pecan Frosting:
Stir together sweetened condensed milk, egg yolks and butter in medium saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture is thickened and bubbly. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla, coconut and pecans. Cool to room temperature. About 2-2/3 cups frosting.
Perfectly Chocolate Chocolate Frosting
butter or margarine (1 stick)
2/3 cup HERSHEY'S Cocoa
3 cups powdered sugar
1/3 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
Melt butter. Stir in cocoa. Alternately, add powdered sugar and milk, beating to spreading consistency.
Add small amount additional milk, if needed. Stir in vanilla.

Egg salad for breakfast…
For dinner last night I used dressing for Poolside Slaw (recipe below) and made a Napa cabbage salad (I had a red pepper, celery, cucumber and green onions — so many things can work: carrots, snap peas, brocolli, etc…). Costco sells NY Steak cut in thin strips that I sautéed with a little bit of TJs Soyaki sauce and then steamed some rice! Yum.
1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
1 medium garlic clove, minced
2 tablespoons well-stirred tahini
2 tablespoons white miso
1 tablespoon honey
1/4 cup rice vinegar
2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
2 tablespoons olive or a neutral oil
Salt and Sriracha to taste

Perfect time of year to make corn salad! For this I boiled four ears of corn, cut it off the Cobb, added cherry tomatoes, diced cucumber and a big handful of diced chives. Finished it with a tiny bit of olive oil and a dash of salt and pepper. Yum!
