Here’s a personal story about why these profit numbers really p**s me off. I used to have lots of positive things to say (and feel) about Amazon. I've been an active seller on the platform for ten years. The first seven of those years were very beneficial to my small business and I would go so far as to call Amazon a juggernaut booster of the ‘little guy’. I was able to introduce our products to a wide audience that probably would not have found us, otherwise.
Great customer feedback, carefully worded descriptions that helped customers find us easily, and fair organic search algorithms meant that many people were introduced to our goods.
Then, three years ago everything changed. Amazon became a “pay to be seen” platform with skyrocketing costs for advertising and a huge influx of sellers hawking identical mass-produced products (with seemingly unlimited ad budgets).
We were effectively priced out of the search results so that new customers would never find us. Amazon has continued to levy higher and higher fees for using their fulfillments services and now has completely jacked up the cost for us to ship to their warehouses for distribution.
The last three years have knocked the legs out from under us and I am doing my best to pivot to other markets and boost our brand awareness directly to customers, so we can survive.
Amazon’s Q2 profit of $13,500,000,000 comes at the expense of businesses like mine. I’m not sure where Seattle Sundries will be in three years, but I can bank on the fact that we won’t be supported by our local leviathan.
Amazon reports $13.5 billion profit in second quarter, driven by AWS The company's second-quarter profits were driven largely by continuing growth in its cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services.
Our wonderful neighbors were broken into this morning, with a huge amount of irreplaceable equipment stolen. I can’t believe how brazen these thieves were. It’s really horrible. This is a heart & soul, blood & sweat business that belongs to a beautiful young family. Please help if you can. They could use our support.
