Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield has announced it will not pay for emergency visits in six states — Indiana, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, New Hampshire and Ohio — if the company decides after the fact that patients were not having medical emergencies, even if they thought they were. But how do you know? Do you know the difference between a migraine and a brain aneurysm? Unless stopped, this policy will be implemented in more Anthem states, and additional health insurance companies will follow with policies of their own. This policy is unlawful.

Andi Foley, DNP, RN, ACCNS-AG, CEN, President of the WA-Emergency Nurses Association, accepted the 2017 Guardian of Emergency Medicine Award on behalf of her chapter. The award recognizes individuals and organizations who have gone above and beyond the norm to protect the safety net of emergency medicine, improve the quality of patient care delivery, and work to support the efforts of WA-ACEP.
WA-ACEP values the WA-ENA’s partnership as we explore solutions to emergency care delivery. In these times of ever growing challenges of boarding and crowding, dangerous understaffing, and sicker patients, their dedication and support to the emergency care safety net is making the difference.
Jobe Recognized During Summit to Sound
Kathleen A. Jobe, MD, FACEP, received the 2017 Nancy Auer Meritorious Achievement Award April 28 during the Summit to Sound meeting. The award recognizes individuals who have gone above and beyond the norm in emergency medicine to improve the quality of patient care and support the efforts of the chapter.
Previous winners of the Nancy Auer Award are Drs. Jim Narnia, MD, FACEP (2016); Marv Wayne, MD, FACEP, FAAEM, FAHA (2015); Ted Walkley, MD, FAAP, FACEP (2013); and Cindy Markus, MD, FACEP (2012).

WA-ACEP President Testifies Before Senate Health Care Committee
“Data is power…it changes behavior,” said WA-ACEP President Nathan Schlicher, MD, JD, MBA, FACEP talking EDIE/PMP before the Senate Health Care Committee Nov. 14. Schlicher, who is also the Secretary-Treasurer of the Washington State Medical Association (WSMA), is part of the WSMA/Washington State Hospital Association Joint Opioid Safe Practice Task Force. Yore Receives ACEP Horizon Award
WA-ACEP Secretary-Treasurer Liam Yore, MD, FACEP, received the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) 2016 Council Horizon Award for outstanding contributions and participation in ACEP Council activities within the first five years of Council Service. Dr. Yore is on the ACEP Steering Committee and the Reimbursement Committee. He is the co-chair of the WA-ACEP Legislative yorehorizonawardCommittee and an emergency physician at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett. Yore received the award Oct. 16 during ACEP16 in Las Vegas.
Former WA-ACEP member Alison Haddock, MD, FACEP also received the 2016 Horizon Award.

Dr. Yore is the fourth WA-ACEP Board Member to receive the Horizon Award in the past seven years. Other winners are Drs. Nathan Schlicher, Enrique Enguidanos, and John Milne.
