Team XBOT - Team 488 FIRST Robotics Competition team from Seattle, Washington, USA.
Huge congratulations is due to our team xbot FRC #488 with XBOT Robotics!
This team has worked so hard and gotten through many engineering feats this year... in doing so, they were able to qualify for FIRST Worlds in Houston! team 488 qualified after a nail-biting competition at Pacific Northwest FIRST District Championship last week.
We will be cheering the team on and hope you will join the livestream (to be posted later this week) starting on April 19th. Good luck to our students, mentors and robot who are flying out starting tomorrow.
Today celebrates how far womenβs rights and gender equality have come in recent years, while still recognizing the strides forward needed. Science, technology, engineering and mathematics are still heavily male-dominated β only 21% of engineering majors and 19% of computer science majors are women.
β Why?
According to data from AAUW, studies show that there are key factors perpetuating gender STEM gaps in education:
π» Gender Stereotypes
β Male-Dominated Cultures
β Fewer Role Models - a Harvard study found that if there were as many role models for women in engineering as men, the gender gap would be cut in half
β What can we do to close the STEM gap?
The foundation for a STEM career is laid early in life. Focusing on organizations and policies in early education are key to provide enough support to break this barrier.
π Improve STEM education and support for girls in early education
π Work to recruit, attract and retain women into STEM majors
π‘ Give girls and women the skills and confidence to success in math and science
We are grateful for the collaboration between our nonprofit and our partners at University of Washington, Seattle Public Schools, Microsoft, Boeing, Best Buy, The Fordham Street and Norcliffe Foundations. Over the next year we will work together to provide these foundational skills to girls in Seattle Public Schools.

Our Executive Director Naomi Takeuchi, MBA, as well as volunteers Wen Hua Chen, Johnny Wu, and Jeremy Calvert spoke to University of Washington students at the Allen School Recruiting Fair pertaining to XBOT Robotics internship opportunities last week.
We aim to see that all students have an equal opportunity to engage with FIRST, and to kickstart the learning pipeline at an early age so that ALL students have a higher potential to get into programs like UW Computer Science.
It is Giving Tuesday! Please take a moment to help our organization provide STEAM programs to underserved students in the South Seattle area. We could not continue our work without your support.
