JOHNNY WHITE
Played by Tom Varey
• White's father, who'd been a talented sculler in his younger days, often rowed his shell alone on Lake Washington.
• When he graduated from high school two years early, White was too young
-and not strong enough - to pursue his (and his father's) dream of rowing at the UW.
• White spent two years after high school doing heavy labor at a shipyard and a sawmill to save for college. When he arrived at the UW he was tall and muscular.

The Washington Rowing community mourns the passing of John Squadroni. (Right side of photo)
John rowed at Washington on the Freshman men’s crew. After which he joined Dick Erickson’s Varsity squad.
In the summer of 1980 Bob Ernst was asked to coach the women’s varsity squad and John asked if he could help coach.
Jan Harville was the Novice coach and the Varsity squad was very large so John helped coach while still taking undergrad courses in forestry.
The rest is history, John developed the athletes that progressed through the 4’s to the JV and on to the Varsity.
The team went on to win the National Championship in 1981,’82,’83,’84,’85 and ‘87.
In 1984 Bob Ernst took a leave of absence to prepare the Olympic VIII that won Gold in Los Angeles.
John coached the UW Varsity that won the National Championship!
After graduating from UW John coached the University of New Hampshire women’s varsity to great results and eventually was asked to Coach California Women’s team.
Since his time at Cal John has run a very successful business which featured skills he acquired as a Forester in Washington.
Rest in peace John.

The Great Race!
and beyond, Washington Athletics is dedicated to honoring the significant contributions made by Native Americans, as well as celebrating the rich and varied cultures, customs, and history.
November 29th, 1941
Swinomish leader Tandy Wilbur arranged a competition between two Indigenous racing canoes and two shells rowed by the University of Washington oarsmen. Wilbur intended the race to help form bonds among the different tribal groups living on the Swinomish reservation, and to use publicity from the race to build economic ties to the settler communities nearby. The four crews made a series of 100-yard sprints down Swinomish Slough, from the Swinomish Reservation to the town of La Conner. When interviewed in the 1990s, members from both sides remembered winning the race.
Image one shows the Indigenous pullers and the Husky Crew posing next to their canoes and shells. Swinomish leader Charlie Edwards, holding the light hat, stands in front of "Lone Eagle" on the right, and "Susie Q" is in the middle. UW crew coach Al Ulbrickson with the dark coat is standing in front of his rowers, with the second UW shell visible at left and right.
Image two shows the four racing crafts in the water. The pullers were racing canoes named "Lone Eagle" and "Susie Q". The Husky oarsmen raced the “Husky II” and an unidentified shell.
Emmett Oliver remarked “The canoe represents Native life at its fullest”….In sum there is a long and significant tradition of canoe in Coastal Salish culture

Well rowed, John.
UW Rowing Mourns The Passing Of John Sayre '58 - University of Washington Athletics Former Washington oarsman John Sayre, the stroke rower of the legendary 1958 UW men's crew, has died at the age of 87, his family has announced.
Leading a team to glory takes the skill of a great coach.
After rowing as a student at the University of Washington, Al Ulbrickson went on to coach the crew there from 1927 until retiring in 1959. His UW crews won six Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships; four of those times they won varsity, junior varsity and freshman titles in the same year. He also coached gold medal-winning U.S. rowing teams in the 1936 Berlin and 1948 London Olympics, also taking a bronze in 1952 Helsinki. He was one of five coaches who were charter members of UW Athletic Hall of Fame when it was established in 1979.
