Those of you who have been with us for a long time know that we used to take medical insurance. The reason we stopped is due to reimbursement rates for massage not increasing in about two decades. While insurance companies have steadily increased their premiums every year, their remittances to massage therapists have stayed stuck in the early aughts. As anyone who lives in expensive Seattle knows, living on a wage from two decades ago just isn't possible, so that's why many massage therapists, in addition to us, on the insurance rosters have dropped their provider status.
What can you as a consumer do to improve access to your insurance plan benefits?
Two things: Help pass bill HB 1655 by calling your representative and telling them to support it. The bill would mandate that insurance companies give raises pegged to the consumer price index. https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary?BillNumber=1655&Year=2023&Initiative=false
The other thing to do is file a complaint with the insurance commissioner's office. If you are paying an increased rate every year or two, you should expect to have full access to care. If you cannot find a massage therapist covered by your insurance due to LMT's dropping their provider status, then you are not getting what you are paying for.
https://www.insurance.wa.gov/file-complaint-or-check-your-complaint-status
File a complaint or check your complaint status | Washington state Office of the Insurance Commissioner If you have a problem with an insurance company or an agent, agency or other insurance licensee you can file a complaint against them with our office.

Sorry, no epsom salt here…
Most of us are touch-starved in this culture that demands autonomy to the point of isolation. So much healing and nourishment can come from just a 20 second hug 💫❤️
The average length of a hug between two people is 3 seconds. But the researchers have discovered something fantastic. When a hug lasts 20 seconds, there is a therapeutic effect on the body and mind. The reason is that a sincere embrace produces a hormone called "oxytocin", also known as the love hormone. This substance has many benefits in our physical and mental health, helps us, among other things, to relax, to feel safe and calm our fears and anxiety. This wonderful tranquilizer is offered free of charge every time we have a person in our arms, who cradled a child, who cherish a dog or a cat, that we are dancing with our partner, the closer we get to someone or simply hold the Shoulders of a friend.
A famous quote by psychotherapist Virginia Satir goes, “We need 4 hugs a day for survival. We need 8 hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.” Whether those exact numbers have been scientifically proven remains to be seen, but there is a great deal of scientific evidence related to the importance of hugs and physical contact. Here are some reasons why we should hug::
1. STIMULATES OXYTOCIN
Oxytocin is a neurotransmitter that acts on the limbic system, the brain’s emotional centre, promoting feelings of contentment, reducing anxiety and stress, and even making mammals monogamous. It is the hormone responsible for us all being here today. You see this little gem is released during childbirth, making our mothers forget about all of the excruciating pain they endured expelling us from their bodies and making them want to still love and spend time with us. New research from the University of California suggests that it has a similarly civilising effect on human males, making them more affectionate and better at forming relationships and social bonding. And it dramatically increased the libido and sexual performance of test subjects. When we hug someone, oxytocin is released into our bodies by our pituitary gland, lowering both our heart rates and our cortisol levels. Cortisol is the hormone responsible for stress, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
2. CULTIVATES PATIENCE
Connections are fostered when people take the time to appreciate and acknowledge one another. A hug is one of the easiest ways to show appreciation and acknowledgement of another person. The world is a busy, hustle-bustle place and we’re constantly rushing to the next task. By slowing down and taking a moment to offer sincere hugs throughout the day, we’re benefiting ourselves, others, and cultivating better patience within ourselves.
3. PREVENTS DISEASE
Affection also has a direct response on the reduction of stress which prevents many diseases. The Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine says it has carried out more than 100 studies into touch and found evidence of significant effects, including faster growth in premature babies, reduced pain, decreased autoimmune disease symptoms, lowered glucose levels in children with diabetes, and improved immune systems in people with cancer.
4. STIMULATES THYMUS GLAND
Hugs strengthen the immune system. The gentle pressure on the sternum and the emotional charge this creates activates the Solar Plexus Chakra. This stimulates the thymus gland, which regulates and balances the body’s production of white blood cells, which keep you healthy and disease free.
5. COMMUNICATION WITHOUT SAYING A WORD
Almost 70 percent of communication is nonverbal. The interpretation of body language can be based on a single gesture and hugging is an excellent method of expressing yourself nonverbally to another human being or animal. Not only can they feel the love and care in your embrace, but they can actually be receptive enough to pay it forward to others based on your initiative alone.
6. SELF-ESTEEM
Hugging boosts self-esteem, especially in children. The tactile sense is all-important in infants. A baby recognizes its parents initially by touch. From the time we’re born our family’s touch shows us that we’re loved and special. The associations of self-worth and tactile sensations from our early years are still imbedded in our nervous system as adults. The cuddles we received from our Mom and Dad while growing up remain imprinted at a cellular level, and hugs remind us at a somatic level of that. Hugs, therefore, connect us to our ability to self love.
7. STIMULATES DOPAMINE
Everything everyone does involves protecting and triggering dopamine flow. Low dopamine levels play a role in the neurodegenerative disease Parkinson’s as well as mood disorders such as depression. Dopamine is responsible for giving us that feel-good feeling, and it’s also responsible for motivation! Hugs stimulate brains to release dopamine, the pleasure hormone. Dopamine sensors are the areas that many stimulating drugs such as co***ne and methamphetamine target. The presence of a certain kinds of dopamine receptors are also associated with sensation-seeking.
8. STIMULATES SEROTONIN
Reaching out and hugging releases endorphins and serotonin into the blood vessels and the released endorphins and serotonin cause pleasure and negate pain and sadness and decrease the chances of getting heart problems, helps fight excess weight and prolongs life. Even the cuddling of pets has a soothing effect that reduces the stress levels. Hugging for an extended time lifts one’s serotonin levels, elevating mood and creating happiness.
9. PARASYMPATHETIC BALANCE
Hugs balance out the nervous system. The skin contains a network of tiny, egg-shaped pressure centres called Pacinian corpuscles that can sense touch and which are in contact with the brain through the vagus nerve. The galvanic skin response of someone receiving and giving a hug shows a change in skin conductance. The effect in moisture and electricity in the skin suggests a more balanced state in the nervous system – parasympathetic.
Embrace, embrace with your heart.~~

What will you do with your one wild and precious life?
~ Mary Oliver
“I counted my years and discovered that I have less time to live from here on out than what I have lived until now.
I feel like that kid who won a pack of sweets: the first ones ate them with pleasure, but when he realized there were few left he began to taste them intensely.
I no longer have time for endless meetings where statute, rules, procedures and internal regulations are discussed, knowing that nothing will be achieved.
I no longer have time to support dumb people who, despite their chronic age, haven't grown up.
My time is too short: I want the essence, my soul is in a hurry. I don't have much sweets in the package anymore.
I want to live next to human, very humane people, who know how to laugh at their mistakes and who are not inflated by their triumphs and who take on their own responsibilities. This is how you defend human dignity and move towards truth and honesty
It’s the essential that makes life worth living.
I want to surround myself with people who know how to touch hearts, people who have been taught to grow up with gentle touches of their soul.
Yes, I'm in a hurry, I'm rushing to live with the intensity that only maturity can give.
I don't mean to waste any of the leftover sweets. I'm sure these will be delicious, a lot more than the ones I've eaten so far.
My goal is to reach a satisfied and peaceful end with my loved ones and my conscience.
We have two lives and the second one starts when you realize you only have one. "

First in person Core Energetics group session just completed. So excited to hold space for a group of intrepid souls as they dive deep into learning about themselves and the shadow places within. Deep gratitude to mentors and teachers from whom this list of tenets came
Hi Folks! I don't post a lot about the Core Energetics aspect of our business, but it's a rich offering in the services we offer. Body-based and deep-diving, it's an approach to personal growth and transformation that holds space for the totality of who you are. Over the next little bit I’ll be publishing a series of articles exploring, via the lens of Core Energetics theory, why we get caught doing what we do, and a possibility for transformation. At the end of each article there will be an opportunity to go beyond mental learning and experience the work on a body level. I invite you to keep tuning in!
"How We Block our Energy"
Self-help gurus these days run a thriving business--probably because most of us are looking for ways to better ourselves. When we aren’t doing what we want to do, feeling what we want to feel, or having the experiences we crave, we try on ways to change. Whether it’s waking earlier to exercise, or curbing time spent on social media to focus on more productive activities, we regularly revisit efforts to push against our bad habits that block us from a greater experience of freedom.
But, as much as we want the freedom that removing bad habits would give us, it’s clear very few of us actually achieve this goal. For this reason, coaches and self-help gurus are assured of an enduring business model: we drag our feet and they prod us along.
But what’s at the root of our foot dragging? I’ve heard some people blame laziness, and others, fear—flaws supposedly best-overcome with time-management skills and stronger will-power. If we could only figure out the right diet, the right mantra, the right app, or the right pillow –then we might finally know what it’s like to live from the place we want to be.
If only we can do it right, THEN we will know freedom.
It seems reasonable—and again it’s why self-help is such a booming business model, but here’s the rub: efforts to remove self-sabotaging habits are likely to fail if those habits were birthed in service of keeping you safe.
Our self-sabotaging habits—the ways we block our life energy—came into being for good reason: they emerged from the need to keep ourselves safe, and in some cases, alive. These strategies developed during childhood—a time when we had very little control over our environment. A child who needed to be perfect to earn approval from his parents grew up learning to be self-critical of his naturally imperfect ways of being. Another child might have had to be needy and weak to have the nurture and attention they longed for from her parents. Still another might have needed to feel a sense of satisfaction in an underdog status as a way to not let the pain of defeat by external forces crush them. Such patterns become so engrained that they’re instinctual and habitual—so much so that efforts to reprogram them often don’t work when approached from the “change your mindset and your behaviors” attitude that some coaching styles often focus on.
We hate that we block ourselves, yet we can’t seem to figure out how to not do it.
Both personal experience and witnessing others’ process has led me to see how going to the source material that birthed our self-sabotaging tendencies is an effective way to finally be free of them. Our tendency to resist positive actions for our own benefit comes from places with very powerful reasons for resistance. If all the podcasts, apps, books, and time management tools aren’t helping to make the shift towards freedom craved, it may be time to dive deeper.
Core Energetics is a tool for self-growth that looks at the root of why we block ourselves the way we do. It’s a modality for self-exploration that examines all levels of our self—our psychology, our emotions, our physicality, our actions, as well as our own personal relationship to spirituality—to daylight the many ways our personal history shaped who we are and how we operate in life. With that deeper understanding comes access to the energy and will needed to finally take effective steps in one’s own best behalf. A deeper dive into Core Energetics and its approach to self-transformation continues in the next article, looking at how our energy impacts our consciousness, and vice versa.
Embody it: bring a typical incident to mind that causes you to “trip up”, get flustered, or otherwise feel “off” internally. Sense your body as you think of the incident--where do you feel tight? Do you feel a pain or ache anywhere? How about weakness or possibly a lack of sensation? Do you feel any places that experience agitation or an inability to stay still? Focus on those places—ask them if there is anything they want to do. Make a movement or say aloud words that come in response. Does a picture or a memory come to mind? Play with moving your energy –that is, let your body move in the way it wants to move in response to the picture or memory. Then, sense your body again—has anything shifted? How do your mind and emotions relate to the remembered incident now? What do you notice? (NOTE: exercises in this and future articles are merely suggestions and should only be done in a balanced, resilient emotional and psychological state. Doing too much expressive activity alone might cause intense responses that feel overwhelming. So, only go as far as you are able to stay present in your body, centered and in full control of your wellbeing. Also, acting out on others the feelings that may arise is never okay. Questions posed here are for exploration and further learning about your inner experience.)

We love supporting people during the pandemic! In these times of extended stress and isolation, we are so grateful to be able to be continuously providing safe and effective massage support. Our treatment room is uniquely set up to circulate a massive amount of fresh and filtered air ventilation. And while that means a slightly brisker massage room during winter, you will be kept delightfully cozy warm by the powerful gas fireplace, the overhead infrared heater, and the table warmer. Masks worn by you and us help keep it safe--but the unique way we set-up the face cradle covering allows you to be safely mask-free while face down if you choose, so that you can be protected AND breathe well. Come let us take care of you--you know you need it ☺️
So grateful that we qualified for the Covid vaccine as healthcare providers; so happy to know that being vaccinated helps us to safely continue providing needed touch and contact for so many struggling with protracted isolation 🙌🏼
