Magic Pennies: Love and the Art of Nonprofit Fundraising - Join us and register for our upcoming Arts Business Clinic (ABC) with Maria Kolby-Wolfe tomorrow, July 15 from 5-6:00 PM PT.

Nonprofit work is the work we do to make the world more just. More beautiful. Healthier. Happier. Cleaner. Fairer. To successfully carry out these lofty and important missions, nonprofit organizations must secure adequate financial and relational resources: They must fundraise. For many, this is a grim but necessary aspect of what is otherwise seen as joyful, vital, and fulfilling work. In this session, you'll discover that the joy and fulfillment of the work itself can extend, embrace, and become inextricably linked to the efforts required to support that work as well. We'll explore the relationship between fundraising and community organizing, uncover and strengthen a joyful perspective around raising funds, and walk away with solid tips and tactics for raising the resources needed to change the world.

This event is virtual and free to attend, registration is open now at shunpike.org/events or through our link in bio.

In 2023, the King County Council unanimously passed Doors Open legislation to increase funding to the County’s arts, heritage, science, and historic preservation non-profit organizations through a 0.1% sales tax. 4Culture is the County’s designated agency to distribute these funds, anticipated to be approximately $100 million per year. Join 4Culture to learn about the two grant programs opening in 2024: Sustained Support and Doors Open Facilities. Both programs have $24 million to award and will be open for application from August 1st – September 4th.

Gou Gou by Vivian Li is currently on display on the corner of Mercer St and Terry Ave N.

“Puns are a huge part of Chinese culture since many words sound similar and sometimes can only be differentiated by their tone or context. The word for dog is 狗 (gǒu) and the word for fruit is 果 (guǒ) . GOU GUO is a celebration of this fortunate coincidence!”

Friendship Bracelets by Julie Alpert is currently on display on the corner of Mercer St and Terry Ave N.

“Growing up, I attended day camp in suburban Maryland where we spent summers cross-legged under trees making and trading embroidery thread bracelets. These oversized stiff friendship bracelets contradict the soft and flexible ones from my childhood as a way to freeze and exaggerate a sweet memory.”

Drawn In by Fiona Tang is currently on display on the corner of Republican St and Boren Ave S

“I use my mural-size drawings to connect humans and animals, evoke emotions, create a profound impact, foster vulnerability, and a sense of wonder. My artworks symbolize personal battles, conveyed through intense marks and trompe l'oeil, aiming to transform the viewer's passive relationship with art.”

Hilltop Stories, Visual Reflections by Dionne Bonner is currently on display on the corner of Harrison St & Boren Ave N.

“Home” evokes feelings of time spent at Dionne’s great grandmother’s house, and with her family. The work expresses the artist’s connection to these memories that define her youth like treasures from a time capsule, describing the welcoming, close-knit, yet redlined and disinvested Hilltop neighborhood of the past.

Pass It On by Courtney Martin is currently on display on the corner of Harrison St & Boren Ave N.

“Without even realizing it, we leave traces of ourselves on the people around us. Actions, body language, words, touch, or just your presence are enough to leave an impact. Connection is a force, and the gravity of the situation is: we are all just figuring it out as we go along. Additionally, your past self and sometimes even your previous generations can peek through and leave traces on others as well. Examining and healing from your past becomes not just a personal journey, but a responsibility that will affect everyone around you, from your closest friend to the stranger on the street. Some are more committed to growing while others don’t get (or seek out) that opportunity. How often do we choose kindness and curiosity for ourselves, and realize that our fellow humans are so often on a similar journey? By using the human form and self-portraits to explore these connections and kindnesses, I weave my own hair through the pieces to study our sometimes delicate and temporary impacts on the people around us, and I remain hopeful that the permanent traces we leave behind represent the best of us.”

For Your Convenience by Emily Bromberg is currently on display on the corner of Thomas St and Boren Ave N.

“The often invisible nature of complex chronic illness can be a barrier to receiving medical care, support, and understanding. “For Your Convenience” seeks to make visible the invisible illnesses of tick borne infection and mold toxicity with their myriad effects on all areas of life, as well as the potential for healing once diagnosed and treated.”

Peace is Possible by Lily Gray is currently on display on the corner of Thomas St and Boren Ave N.

“My art explores the delicate dance of environment and humanity, exploring conflicts and beauty. Nature motifs symbolize the journey, woven with tales of colonialism, conquests, and ancestral histories—capturing displacement, war, political turmoil, assimilation, grief, joy, and the enduring spirit.”

Follow Me by Kyung Hee Im is currently on display on the corner of John and Boren Ave N.

“Follow Me shows the imprint of hands with fingerprints as unique identifiers. It explores how an individual can influence others within new networking systems. The work raises questions about individual identity vs collective identity and asks – to what extent are people retaining or losing parts of their identities in new networking systems?”
