Happy 57th Birthday to our office hero, Jennifer Debree!!! (I'm just guessing on her age, by the way...)
Beginning next year, the HVAC industry is undergoing a big change that consumers should be aware of. A new refrigerant will start being used in air conditioning systems per government mandates. Unlike the last major change in 2003, which took several years to fully roll out, this one is happening much faster. When the refrigerant changed in 2003 from R22 to R410a refrigerant, the rollout of the new refrigerant was over 5 years. There was plenty of time to learn and adjust. But with the new R32 and R454a refrigerants, there’s no time to ease into the change. On January 1st, manufacturers can no longer make new equipment that uses R410a refrigerant - and equipment with the new refrigerant is not available yet, so there is no time for us to test it.
What does this mean for consumers? In the past, if you needed to replace your AC system, you could sometimes mix old and new parts to save money temporarily. Unfortunately that will no longer be an option with these new refrigerants. If you need a replacement part, and the part is delayed by a month or more, you’ll have to replace the entire system at once if you do not want to wait.
Will new equipment cost more? Yes, the new refrigerant is mildly flammable. This has resulted in the new equipment requiring additional circuit boards or sensors to detect refrigerant leaks, driving up the cost of the equipment. In addition, manufacturers need to cover costs for the development of new equipment and upgrades to their manufacturing plants that have been required to handle the new refrigerants as well. We have been told to expect approximate price increases anywhere between 10 and 30 percent from our suppliers.
With prices rising and new regulations coming soon, if you think you’ll need to replace your AC system soon, it might be wise to do it before the new refrigerant change becomes mandatory. First of all, today’s equipment will be less expensive. And second, do you want the be to early adopter while all the kinks are worked out?
Remember, HVAC contractors didn’t ask for these government mandated changes — we’re just trying to make the process as smooth as possible for everyone.

Does running a ceiling fan help to keep a room cooler? Running a ceiling fan can help to keep a room feel cooler. Ceiling fans work by circulating the air in a room. This circulation can help to create a wind chill effect, which can make you feel cooler even if the temperature of the air does not change. You feel cooler at a higher temperature when wind...
