Today is the Feast Day of the Assumption of Mary!

August 15th is not only Ferragosto but is also the Feast Day of the Assumption of Mary, the day the Blessed Virgin Mary assumed into heaven. In Italy, small towns typically celebrate with a Mass and a religious procession with a marching band. The day is full of activities, including lots of great food stands. Many Italian American communities celebrate the Assumption with weekend-long festivities as well.⁠

The Sewickley SOI is excited to host Melissa E. Marinaro, as she presents Highlights from the Italian American Collection. The presentation will include a brief history lesson about Italian immigration to the United States, then transition to talk specifically about Western Pennsylvania. Stories will be shared about the Italian American Collection in the Heinz History Center. She will also share some stories from Sewickley and the surrounding area.

WHEN: This Thursday, February 22 @ 6pm.

Ciao a tutti! My name is Raquel Hewitt, and I hail from the Pittsburgh, PA area. I graduated from The Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. in Middle Level Math Education, and I am currently an 8th Grade Pre-Algebra teacher at a cyber school.

I have been a member of the Nicola Misasi Lodge 1277 in Sewickley, PA for 7 years. I am a member of the Ladies Only Night Committee, a Pennsylvania State Convention Delegate for the past two conventions, and I am currently on the committee for our lodge’s cent’anni anniversary gala!

Both of my Nonni emigrated from a small town in Calabria and made their way to Pittsburgh. Last fall, I traveled to Italy to visit my Nonna’s sister and her family. It feels amazing to still have solid roots in Italy!

What does being Italian mean to you?
Being Italian is the part of my heritage that truly identifies me. It means feeling proud of where my family has come from, and understanding the strength my grandparents had to leave their homeland behind and bring their traditions with them. It’s about spending time with family, taking part in the culture, and making sure that I carry on the story of my family. After moving back to Pittsburgh, where my Italian side of the family lives, I was able to learn even more about our family history, and grow closer to my Nonna. One day I’ll perfect her sauce recipe, but until then, I’ll just keep trying!
