Day 2 Junior Fire Camp:
On Day 2 we visited station 2 and the Aspinwall Recreational Area. The juniors watched a vehicle rescue demonstration, learned about hose lines, practicing managing a hose line during battle of the barrel, and received a certificate of completion from our chief. The juniors also set up a landing zone and communicated with Life Flight to land via the radio. We ended the day with Pizza & Ice Cream.
Thank you to those who have donated to make this camp possible:

Day 1 Junior Fire Camp:
On Day 1 we visited Station 1 and Station 3 to complete activities. The juniors learned what it means to be a junior firefighter. Our 12 juniors participated in activities including Forcible entry, hand tools, ladders, fire extinguishers, SCBA’s, and how to find a victim in a smokey room. These are all skills that are taught throughout the essentials of firefighting. The junior fire camp was an opportunity for the kids to see if they would want to join a local fire department. Our department will get them in contact to the closest volunteer fire station to them.

Thank you to those who have donated to make this camp possible:

LOOKING FOR AN EASY WAY TO HELP?
A lot of people are interested in donating to their local fire company, but not always money. As Summer gets closer and the temperatures rise, it’s more and more important for our members to stay hydrated.
We may go through an entire cooler of water on a single call or during a training. Consider donating cases of water to your local fire company.
You know what the cases of water are being used for and you know it means the world to the firefighter on a hot day.

Tonight the Fox Chapel Girl Scout’s Daisy troop came to visit station 1. They went through our fire safety trailer, learned to not fear a firefighter in gear, and went for a fire truck ride. They were also generous enough to bring us multiple cases of water and Gatorade. Thank you all!

Our month in review:
Saturday May 11th we participated in the Fox Chapel Area School District's Safety & Wellness Day. Parents and kids had the opportunity to go through our safety trailer and learn what to do if a fire where to happen in their home.

Tuesday May 14th during the day members visited Watson Institute along with our local officials. The students led the tour and we enjoyed learning about their school and programs. A great collaboration to ensure the safety and readiness in the event of emergencies.
Tuesday evening we recognized 3 inspirational members of our department. We honored, Assistant Chief Gene Marsico (Past Chief of Aspinwall VFD) and Assistant Chief Lou Costanzo (Past Chief of Sharpsburg VFD) for all their years of service.
The third celebration was for Nick Scheid who has been in the fire service for 60 years, has served in many positions of the fire department and has made a huge impact on every single person within the department.

Saturday May 18th & Sunday May 19th we hosted a Pump Operations class. Members had a refresher on pumping and drafting operations.

Sunday May 19th in the evening we attending Goldfish Swim School - Fox Chapel's safety day. The kids where able to sit in our rescue and ladder truck.

Monday May 20th a group of kids from the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children came to Station 1 for a field trip. They learned how to know when there is a fire in their home, how to call 911/what to tell them, and how to escape or when to shelter in place.

Today our department hosted the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children for a field trip. Students where able to go through our safety trailer to learn fire safety. Learning how to feel a door for heat and how to call 911 and being prepared for the questions they will ask you. Students where also able to feel the firefighter gear and know not to be afraid. We ended the day giving everyone an opportunity to go for a fire truck ride.
We hope they had as much fun as we did!
