Holiday Spirit Week Day 3: character day 🎅🏼🧑🏻‍🎄

👂🏼EAR INFECTIONS WHEN YOU ARE OVER AGE 2.............

One of the helpful things about having a more verbal child is that they can tell you if something hurts! With all of the upper respiratory illnesses going around, it can be very common for our kids to experience ear pain, and even ear infections.

As our kids get bigger, their ears do too, and so does their potential for the ear infections to get better on their own, without having to use antibiotics. We are ALWAYS trying to avoid antibiotics, and even more so during this time of medication shortages.

If you suspect your child has an ear infection try these things first:

1. Pain reliever (Tylenol/Acetaminophen, Advil/Motrin/Ibuprofen) on the appropriate dosing schedule around the clock.
2. Consider starting a nasal steroid spray for a few days (flonase, rhinocort, nasacort, etc)
3. In someone over age 5 you might consider a very short 1-2 days of Afrin nasal spray usage.

If after trying these pain control measures for 48 hours, your child is still having pain, then we should evaluate them to consider if it might be time to use an antibiotic.

The MAJORITY of the time, however, the ear infection will resolve on its own, partly because it's likely caused by the virus they are fighting, but also because their growing bodies are great at healing!!
