You won't find a therapist like Kat very easily, we know we got very lucky when she came aboard our Sheboygan Massage crew! Kat has been practicing massage for over 10 years, She is most passionate about working with clients dealing with chronic pain or post surgical.

Kat's training includes neuromuscular therapy and manual lymphatic drainage post-op. You'll also find Kat often using cupping & taping to help people maintain decreased nerve pain and swelling.

We all love a good F-Word at Sheboygan Massage πŸ˜‰

Speaking of food, Thanksgiving week is officially here! But here's something we all might not have realized: The average American will consume between 3,000-4,500 calories on their Thanksgiving dinner plate, give or take some calories on each end of the spectrum of course.

There's no need to skip Thanksgiving dinner, but there are ways to make it a bit healthier this year and skip some of the damage. Here's a few fun facts to keep in mind while preparing your feast this week:

-Dark meat has about TWICE the amount of saturated fat as the white breast meat, so don't just "wing it" on your turkey choice this year

-One cup of mashed potatoes with gravy can have around 300 calories. Since you don't need to cut or even chew mashed potatoes, they're an easy food to eat a lot of in a short time. If you're someone who likes to add a snack or two into your normal day, keep in mind 350 is around the calories you'd be aiming for in an entire meal- So take it easy on the mashed potato scoops on your plate this year, and you won't be tempted to keep over-eating until your plate is empty.

-Everybody has to have a slice of pie on Thanksgiving right? It's like an unspoken rule. Go ahead and indulge, we're definitely not laying down a strict no pie policy. However, you may want to keep in mind that the types of pies from lowest to highest amount of calories typically go as follows:
Pumpkin, Apple, Pecan. So if possible, say yes to that pumpkin pie and cut a few hundred calories off your meal total.

-A few other fairly simple swaps can include whole grain rolls instead of white rolls, swapping out regular milk for heavy cream in the preparation process, and drinking water instead of alcohol during the meal, as water will add no extra or empty calories & will also trick your stomach into thinking it's fuller than it actually is.

Follow these tips to help you enjoy your favorite F-word, instead of feeling like an overstuffed turkey this Thanksgiving season.

It's been a few weeks since our last post - but don't worry, we're back! Tonight's yoga pose is Downward Dog, one of yoga's most widely known and recognized poses.

This pose is a great full body stretch, and involves equal parts strengthening and stretching. It's also a great way to get the blood flowing to your brain 🧠 When you're fully in the pose, try holding it for at least 10 breaths before breaking.

Although Downward Dog is a full body stretch, you should notice the stretch most in your hamstrings and calves. You'll also notice the strengthening most in your arms, shoulders and legs, as they are holding all of your body weight in this pose. Your feet should remain facing towards your head for the entire pose and should be flat on the ground if you're able, while remaining hip width apart. If your arms aren't quite strong enough to support your full body weight yet, try this pose with your elbows on the ground first. Once you become a master, you can try changing your Downward Dog pose into a 3 Legged Dog Pose, simply by raising one leg in the air, opening up your hip flexor muscles and shifting even more of the strengthening to your arms and shoulder muscles.

This we've carved out some time to talk about safety at the pumpkin patch!

Have you made it to the pumpkin patch yet this Fall? It's October now, so if you haven't yet, chances are you will be taking that very important family pumpkin picking trip very soon. One guaranteed way to tweak your back this Fall is to carry a much too heavy pumpkin back to your car with incorrect lifting mechanics.

Pumpkins are hard to carry, given their round shape and the fact that their only "handles" are their stems, which we all know break pretty easily. We all seem to forget throughout the year just how heavy pumpkins can get. Picking up one pumpkin is all it takes to remind us just how much they can weigh, and unfortunately, one pumpkin is also all it could take to injure your back this season.

Here are a few tips & tricks you can take with you to the pumpkin patch this year:
- Test the weight of the pumpkin before picking it up. How? Push it with your foot first
-Do NOT lean over the pumpkin to pick it up. Instead, face the pumpkin, place your feet on both sides of it, bend your legs and keep your back straight (Again, let us stress, do NOT bend over the pumpkin as tempting as this might be). Your back and spine are able to support the most weight in a straight up & down position.
- As you lift the pumpkin, keep it as close to your body as possible, ideally somewhere around your belly button. Think of it this way, the further the pumpkin's weight moves from your body, the more pressure you're putting on your spine and back.
-Lift the pumpkin using strength from your legs, not your back. This is the single most important take away lesson: NEVER lift with your back! When your pumpkin is held close to your body, your legs and your hips are supporting most of its weight.

Most pumpkin patches have wagons available to help get those pumpkins back to your car. There's no shame in using a wagon, or simply asking someone else in your group for help. There's also always the option of simply picking a smaller pumpkin as well.

Don't squash your fun with back pain this Fall. Be smart and lift with safe technique!
