Gov. Evers Appoints Matthew Spence as Sheboygan County Sheriff
MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers today appointed Matthew Spence as Sheboygan County Sheriff. The appointment fills a vacancy created by Sheriff Cory Roeseler’s retirement, effective June 3, 2024. Spence will complete the remainder of the unexpired term that ends January 2027.
“With more than two decades of service in the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office, Matthew Spence is an experienced law enforcement officer who is committed to his community,” said Gov. Evers. “I am confident he will serve the people of Sheboygan County well as their next sheriff.”
Spence has spent his entire law enforcement career with the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin (UW)–La Crosse and the Wisconsin Police Corps, he became a patrol deputy in November 2002. Since then, he has risen through the ranks to become the current captain of patrol and criminal investigations, where he oversees the annual department budget, coordinates training, and supervises all sworn officers. During his more than twenty years of service, he has also pursued further educational opportunities, including a master of public administration degree with a law enforcement administration emphasis from UW–Oshkosh, and graduated from the FBI National Academy in 2022.

Why D-Day Matters:
"While the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, usually termed D-Day, did not end the war in Europe—that would take eleven more months—success on that day created a path to victory for the Allies. The stakes were so great, the impact so monumental, that this single day stands out in history."
"The D-Day operation of June 6, 1944, brought together the land, air, and sea forces of the allied armies in what became known as the largest amphibious invasion in military history. The operation, given the codename OVERLORD, delivered five naval assault divisions to the beaches of Normandy, France."
"Many explanations have been given for the meaning of D-Day, June 6, 1944, the day the Allies invaded Normandy from England during World War II. When someone wrote to General Eisenhower in 1964 asking for an explanation, his executive assistant Brigadier General Robert Schultz answered: 'General Eisenhower asked me to respond to your letter. Be advised that any amphibious operation has a 'departed date'; therefore the shortened term 'D-Day' is used.'"
