Local Grant Funds Purchase of Paramedic Equipment

SHELBURNE, VT - Shelburne Rescue is thrilled to announce the award of a $9,000 SCHiP’s grant to fund the purchase of paramedic equipment.

SCHiP’s Treasure Resale Shop, located in the heart of the Shelburne village, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit turning life’s discards into hope for organizations within the Shelburne, Charlotte, and Hinesburg communities.

The SCHiP’s board of directors have been incredible supporters of the rescue department over the years. The department has been awarded several grants from SCHiP’s, funding the purchase of high-visibility jackets for crews to wear in cold or hazardous conditions, AEDs, and mass causality equipment.

Shelburne Rescue is in the process of transitioning to a Paramedic level service, bringing a greater level of advanced life support to the Town of Shelburne and surrounding communities through mutual aid agreements.

Shelburne Rescue will be using these grant funds to offset the purchase of paramedic equipment at a cost of $18,000. The department intends on purchasing this equipment in December for an anticipated transition date in January, 2024.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the SCHiP’s board of directors for their unwavering commitment and invaluable support to Shelburne Rescue. This grant undeniably has the potential to make a lifesaving difference.

Inquiries can be directed to Chief Jacob Leopold at [email protected]

Yesterday members of our department took part in a live action MCI scenario with other neighboring services around Chittenden County. The scenario was set up to test and evaluate our districts readiness for a large scale active shooter / MCI threat. It was a Job well done by all who attended.

We’d like to give a big thanks to the patient models and to NETS for organizing the event and allowing us to participate and assist in all areas (Warm Zone Tactical EMS response & triage, Patient treatment and transport, command observation and evaluation) of the event.

It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of former Shelburne Firefighter Matt Callaghan. Matt was a member of the Shelburne Fire Department from 2003 through 2012, and served as the Department's Secretary for much of that time. Matt and his family moved to Virginia after he left the Department, and for years he has brought joy to many children as a full-time, year-round Santa.

Matt is survived by his wife Margo, stepson Nick, sister Martha, and countless friends. Rest in Peace Matt!

Good afternoon:

The latest from the National Weather Service is that the threat of high wind is diminishing rapidly, creating less risk of trees and powerlines coming down and resulting loss of power.

However: the Arctic cold front/flash freeze will still be upon us by 4:00 P.M., and through tonight and tomorrow. This will bring extreme cold and wind chill well below zero. Please stay off the roads later today and tonight, as icing will occur rapidly.

The Town Office gym is open as a warming shelter, but given icing conditions later today, it may be better to shelter in place at home. If you do come to Town Offices at 5420 Shelburne Road, please bring personal necessities: bedding, medical supplies, basic food to tide you over.

Please call Emergency Management Director Bob Lake at 802.324.9094 with any questions; always call 911 immediately with any actual emergencies, but please refrain from doing so unless it is an emergency. Our Dispatchers anticipate a very busy time when the freezing occurs. We dispatch for nearly three dozen agencies in the region, and as a 911 call taking center, they also handle "rollover" calls from other 911 centers when they are already busy themselves as part of the statewide 911 system.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. Stay home for now unless truly necessary; check in on elderly or vulnerable neighbors when you can.

Please be careful out there on ice and in the cold.

From all of us, we thank you.

Yesterday along the new Ethan Allen Express rail line in West Rutland, a couple walking their dog on the tracks very narrowly missed being struck by the approaching train. Also yesterday, a person was photographed walking his dog on the tracks in Brandon. He was wearing earbuds and was highly unlikely to have heard the approaching Ethan Allen Express, which was only minutes away.

Amtrak practice runs are happening now in preparation of the new service this summer, which extends the service north from Rutland through Middlebury and Vergennes into Burlington. This train runs at speeds of up to 59 mph on continuously welded rail, making the train so quiet it could easily be confused with the sound of the wind blowing through the trees. The train typically only sounds its horn at public railroad crossings, meaning it can travel for miles without sounding the horn. It is up to all of us to stay off the tracks and only cross at designated crossings.

With quieter trains moving at fast speeds, instances like this can turn deadly quickly. Make the safe and smart choice.
