Part II: Fast forward five years…. Bianca is now 9. The changes we have seen in her are incredible. Nasal breathing is much easier, and she can elevate her tongue so much more. Bianca is able to “hold” her tongue up to the roof of her mouth with her mouth open (called the suction hold), and she has virtually no gag reflex. (We are able to basically tickle her tonsils and she doesn’t even flinch!) Part I: Everyday, it astonishes us just how critical airway health is to overall health. Simple intra-oral myofunctional therapy exercises, such as finger sweeping, can be very beneficial. Here is Dr. Pearson’s daughter, Bianca, at age 4. Bianca struggled with nasal breathing, in part due to low tongue-posture because of a tongue-tie. While releasing the tongue-tie was important, myofunctional exercises afterwards are necessary in order for the release to be impactful. Finger sweeping is a very simple way to encourage tongue elevation, which improves nasal breathing, jaw development, and airway health. Cheek and lip massage helps to decrease tension and improve lip closure, while palatal sweeping helps to stimulate the pituitary gland and encourages the tongue to “live” up against the palate during sleep. These exercises are very easy to do at home, on yourself and on your kids. Start very gently, and you’ll be surprised at the changes you’ll see with breathing, posture, eating, speech, and sleep.
