Lord Jesus,

Today, tombstones are marked with American flags to remind us that you raise up men and women to carry out the vocation of soldiering. Those flags and tombstones also remind us that you raise up faithful people who are willing to give their lives to defend our nation, to save the lives of their battle buddies, and to protect our freedoms. We pause today to thank you for our American war fighters who gave their lives for us. You laid down your life and took it up again for them and for us. You promise a glorious resurrection from the dead and life everlasting to those who trust in you. Comfort us with the sure certainty that these graves marked with red, white and blue, and our graves, will one day be opened to eternal life. Help us to find true lasting peace in your promises. Amen.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for keeping your promise to send the Holy Spirit. Through Word and Sacrament, the Holy Spirit nurtures our faith and dwells with us. As you sent your Holy Spirit at Pentecost, continue to cultivate and strengthen the children and families served by our Lutheran centers, schools, and churches. We praise you for the blessings of this past school year and the opportunities you have given through these ministries. Keep away doubts that stem from guilt and skepticism and renew our passion to gladly hear and learn your word. Guard and protect us from satan and the destruction of family and society. Forgive us for our indifference to people you have saved. Help us to use our gifts of time and talents for the good of others and the benefit of your heavenly kingdom. We ask for these blessings in the name of our risen and ascended Savior, Jesus. Amen.

Jesus told his disciples that, though he was going to ascend into heaven, he wasn’t going to leave them alone. He was going to send “the Advocate,” a title for the Holy Spirit. But Jesus wasn’t sending the Spirit just to keep us company. Jesus would have the Advocate give us spiritual power so that we might participate in Christ’s saving work. Here is the final resurrection reality. The Spirit gives us the ability to raise the spiritually dead to life.

We see this happen on Pentecost. The festival of Pentecost was held fifty days after the Passover. (Pentecost is Greek for “fifty.”) It was a time to thank God for the harvest. But on that day, through the Church at work, the Holy Spirit gathered another harvest, a harvest of souls. Therefore, Pentecost is the third great festival of the Church, along with the Nativity and the Resurrection. With the Festival of Pentecost, the festival half of the Church Year comes to a close.
