Being able to engage your core is extremely important, especially as you progress to more difficult movements in your training. As fitness professionals, we find that knowing and understanding how to engage your core properly can be difficult at times. Here is a short video showing you how to properly do so with personal trainers, Dani and Taylor.

How to...
Hello everyone! This is Mason Pearson one of our Fitness Specialist Leads. You probably met me talking up at the front desk, taking one of my classes, or just during one of my workouts at the gym. Today I am going to talk about Push Ups. They are one of the most common exercises, and for good reason! They are a fantastic well rounded exercise that brings in all the major muscles of the upper body using your abs, chest, back, shoulders, and arms. Below is a video demonstration of three push up variations the standard push up, narrow push up, and wide push up. These are just a few of the dozens of push up varieties that are out there waiting to be done in your living room. Let us know if you have any questions or need any modifications!

Assisted Pull-up
Mason, one of our Fitness Center Leads and Class Instructors, is demonstrating our Hammer Strength Assisted Dip/Pull-up machine. On this machine you can perform chin-ups, dips, and pull-ups. On this machine the weight you choose is assisted weight which means the higher the weight you select the easier the exercise becomes. We suggest selecting half your body weight to start. The two movements performed by Mason are the pull-up and chin-up. For the pull-up raise the knee pad until it locks if it is down. Step up onto the foot platforms and grab the handles that are highest and farthest apart. Place knees on the pad then extend your arms until they are practically straight. For the chin-up getting on the machine is the same except you now place your hands in the grips that are closest together. Your palms should be facing you. Allow your arms to extend and then pull yourself back up to the top. Not shown in the video is the dip. If you would like to know more about this exercise and why it is used asked one of our fitness specialists how to do it!

3 Beginner TRX movements from Hunter! These movements can be made easier or harder by changing your foot placement in relation to the wall. Moving your feet closer will make the movements more difficult and further away will make the movements easier. Squat: Feet just outside shoulder width apart. Start the movement by bringing the hips back into the squat. Be sure to keep the knees pushed out over the feet and not ‘knocking’ in the middle. Row: Keeping your core engaged to prevent over extending your back or hips. Keep your elbows up and even with your shoulders, pull yourself towards the anchor point and retract and pinch your shoulder blades together. Then lower yourself back to the starting point with control. I’s, Y’s and T’s: Keeping your core engaged similarly to the row, frame each letter with your arms by retracting your shoulder blades back. These movements can be done together or independently.

Check out how excited Taylor is about our new SCFC merchandise! Rep your local community fitness center in style with our new water bottles and winter hats! Instead of disposable water bottles, we will be selling reusable bottles in an effort to reduce our environmental impact. We’d love it if you’d join us in that effort. There are a limited number of hats left from the Fowl 5K, so get them while you can! Both the hats and water bottles are available to purchase for only $10 each. If you get a hat, we’d love to see you in it! Post a picture of you in your SCFC beanie in the comments section 🙂 Taylor’s tip: Water bottles are hand wash only!
