We were honored to celebrate the life of Sue Crow, beloved nurse, patient advocate, and supporter of Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport Feist-Weiller Cancer Center. Sue was a tireless proponent of integrative medicine at the Cancer Center, and worked hard to ensure elements of this field, such as acupuncture and nutrition, were available to FWCC patients.

To help patients maintain a nutritious diet during and after treatment, Sue even wrote a smoothie recipe book for FWCC patients, which the Cancer Center published in 2016. We saw it fitting to share recipes cards from some of her favorites and serve attendees smoothies to celebrate her memory and many contributions to Feist-Weiller. 🩷🍓🍌🍉

🙌Thank you for all you do, David!

David Dupree, RN, OCN, is a certified oncology nurse and supervisor in the leukemia and bone marrow transplant unit at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport. He’s worked in that unit for his entire professional nursing career – 26 years!

David said he became a nurse because he has always been a public servant and wanted to continue doing that in a capacity he felt was special.

His advice for new nurses or people considering becoming a nurse: Never forget the human aspect of the field.

“No matter what we do or how much we know and learn, we have to be able to read the patient and ensure that we are providing them with the best we have to offer,” he said. “Always strive to provide the patient with an experience that leaves them feeling that they were truly cared for even if only for the time we have them.”

David said he enjoys working with students as they do their rotations. Hematology-oncology isn’t discussed at length in nursing school, he said, and he wants to advocate for more coverage in an area that affects so many people.

“I love to work with the new minds to help them discover new areas of nursing, encourage them to find their passion in nursing and then seek improve what they do on a daily basis,” he said. “I also strongly advise nurses to seek certification to improve their understanding of the entire process of treatment in the area that they are interested in. With certification, the whole spectrum of care is covered, not just the hospital side treatment of the disease processes.”

Thank you, David, for your commitment to providing compassionate care and mentoring young nurses. Your voice helps shape our future, and we are grateful every day for the role you play in the care of our patients and community.

We join our colleagues and community in mourning the passing of Dr. Jay Marion. Dr. Marion was a renowned medical oncology and palliative care specialist, but more importantly, a vital member of Feist-Weiller Cancer Center's faculty, beloved by FWCC patients and LSU Health Shreveport students.

To learn more about Dr. Marion and the Jay Marion, MD Endowment for Compassionate Care at LSU Health Sciences Foundation Shreveport, please visit https://www.lsuhsfoundation.org/marion/.

It is with great sadness that LSU Health Shreveport shares the passing of Jay Marion, MD, on March 13, 2024. His calm, insightful and compassionate demeanor endeared him to students, patients, and families alike throughout his distinguished career. Dr. Marion retired from LSUHS in 2020 due to health challenges but remained engaged until a few months ago when his health no longer allowed. At the time of his retirement, he was serving as a Professor of Medicine and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. He was bestowed the title of Professor Emeritus of Medicine.

A service will be held today in St. Louis, MO.
