𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐀𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤'𝐬 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐠: Forisk’s clients have asked for an updated county-level assessment of growth-to-drain for pine in the South. In the past five years, 27 new sawmills opened (or reopened) along with 17 pellet mills, 2 OSB mills, and numerous mill expansions, increasing wood demand in those local markets. However, closures (or conversions) of 11 pulp/paper mills and 21 sawmills reduced wood demand in other areas, along with capacity decreases. What is the status of Southern market supply given these mill changes?

Growth-to-drain analysis compares the annual growth of timber to annual harvest volumes to provide a measure of market demand relative to supply. A growth-to-drain ratio of 1.0 indicates a balanced market that harvests timber at the rate of growth. Growth that exceeds demand by a large margin indicates oversupply. Conversely, annual removals that exceed growth indicate competitive markets for raw materials. [𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤'𝐬 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐠]

“the first commercial project in Georgia to use mass timber made from southern yellow pine (SYP) timber—grown in the state itself. The project demonstrates the influence that developers and their tenants have in generating demand for mass timber construction, particularly in locations that historically have not had a clear supply and manufacturing chain and highlights the potential for mass timber market expansion across the country.”

Calling all educators! Come learn firsthand why forestry is so important in our state and why Louisiana’s number one cash crop is trees! You will have opportunities to participate in hands-on field experiences, visit a tree harvest operation and tour a forest-product mill. These awe-inspiring experiences will enhance your knowledge of our forests and natural resources which you can pass along to the next generation. And the entire event is FREE to you!

The Louisiana Forestry Educator Tour will also allow you to have access to three national educational programs (Project Learning Tree, Project WET, and Project WILD) for your classroom or organization, receiving guidebooks with over 100 activities which meet national standards and can be easily implemented with your students. You are the key to helping future generations learn the importance of forestry in our state and country.

The tour will incorporate all aspects of conservation including water, wildlife, and woodlands. These experiences will help you be a better educator about Louisiana’s renewable resources and give you fun, interactive tools you may use to teach students about these important topics. This year’s Educators Tour will be hosted by the Louisiana Ecological Forestry Center at Hodges Garden in Florien, LA.

Generous sponsors who believe in the importance of forestry and education have covered the costs for your participation. Please fill out the registration form at the following link to reserve your spot by close of business March 8. Only 25 applicants will be accepted into the program.

In all, about three-quarters of U.S. households typically have some kind of Christmas tree, surveys show.

Why naturally renewing ‘mass timber’ is the building block of the future 07/17/2023

Remember those old-fashion Lincoln Logs children once played with back before they became glued to their tablets?

Today, creative design using wooden materials is no longer just for kids.

Across the globe, wood-framed architecture is increasingly reaching new aesthetic and technical heights.

The move is being fueled by developments in “mass timber” — factory engineered wood made from layers of planks fused together to increase their structural strength and integrity.

Why naturally renewing ‘mass timber’ is the building block of the future The mass-timber industry is quietly emerging as sustainable solution to construction industry pollution — but it remains heavily regulated, particularly in NYC.

We always enjoy hosting a day of summer camp for the School of Agricultural Sciences and Forestry. We taught them about the silvicultural practices we implement for our private landowners as well as the importance of hiring a consulting forester to manage your timberland. They brought almost 40 students this year!

This is the second thinning of a 23 year old pine plantation on one of our tracts near Marshall, Texas. Before the harvest, we physically walk through the stand and mark, with blue paint, the trees to cut. We look at the overall health of the stand and of each tree. Trees with defects, such as crooks, forks, disease, insect damage, etc. are marked and removed from the stand - leaving the highest quality trees to grow into sawlogs.

The improved spacing of the stand allows for better growth of the remaining trees while also opening the canopy to allow more sunlight to reach the forest floor. Additional sunlight enhances the browse that deer and other wildlife eat.

In two years, we will come back to the stand and conduct an understory burn.

The Cushion Lock™ protective wrap takes advantage of the supply chain by using wood from forests that are sustainable managed. Not only that, but its self-locking technology means the product fastens to itSELF for easy wrapping.

He is grateful for the trust placed in him by the voting members of District 11 and looks forward to representing the Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi state societies at the national level.

Attached is a recent effort made by the Society of American Foresters to challenge a political movement known as proforestation.

Generally speaking, proforestation seeks to ban active forest management on public lands based on the claim that forests maximize their climate benefits when left unmanaged.

SAF seeks to educate the public on the benefits of forest management as well as the problems with proforestation.

We are conducting a marked, pine sawlog, select thinning on the Risinger family property south of Carthage, TX.

For a select thinning, we individually mark each tree to be harvested, removing the inferior trees, leaving the best to grow into our high value, crop trees.

The thinning operation keeps the residual trees in a healthy growing condition and enhances the wildlife habitat. Good forest management equals good stewardship of the land.

When Tim started in forestry, 42 years ago, this work was all done with men carrying chain saws through the woods. The industry has certainly advanced over the years.

Thanks to the Risinger Family for trusting us to manage their timberland investment, and thanks to Josh Clarke with Meridian Timber for always doing an outstanding job on the properties we manage.
