Dr. Joanna Michelich's career and experience have taken her far, but her heart never left home. She recently completed two terms as president of the Cochise College Foundation Board of Directors. Michelich's presidency was neither the beginning nor the end of her continued support for Cochise College.
Like many students, Michelich expanded her vision of what was possible for her during her time at Cochise College. "When I came to Cochise, I wanted to be a third-grade teacher, but my advisor opened up a world of other options for me."

Let’s make it happen together!
As we approach Founders Day, a key moment in our 60th Anniversary celebration, we look back at the beginnings of Cochise College. The first page of our very first yearbook features the college’s original wooden doors, adorned with turquoise tiles around the handle. The inscription reads:
"The Door that May Be Opened...
There are many types of doors. Large, massive doors that reveal things beyond imagination. Small doors that, even in their modest size, can unveil the unbelievable. And there are doors that open to a completely new world.
One of those doors stands at the entrance of Cochise College. By crossing its threshold, you open the portals of your mind to worlds of knowledge, freedom of thought, and perhaps a whole new life.
How wide you open these doors and how far you journey through them depends on you.
This, the theme of our first yearbook, is THE DOOR THAT MAY BE OPENED!"
Founders Day is not just a celebration of the college's history but also a recognition of every student, faculty, and community member who has walked through these doors over the past 60 years.
Join us for the celebration on Sept. 19, 2024, at the Sierra Vista Campus, Library Commons from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., or at the Douglas Campus, Student Union from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Looking Back at the Willcox Center’s History 📖
The Willcox Center was built to meet the educational needs of residents throughout the county. If potential students could not make it to daytime classes on campus, Cochise College offered to bring courses to them!
In 1987, Cochise College signed an agreement with the Willcox School District to place two temporary buildings on the Willcox High School Campus. This move was just the beginning. Over the years, our presence grew, leading to the construction of a dedicated Willcox Center in 2010.
Celebrate Cochise College's 60th Anniversary with us and discover the rich history of each of our campuses and centers. Join us for a reception on September 19th at 4 p.m. during our Founders Day Celebration.

Beyond Graduation: Inspiring Alumni Stories
Priscilla Polanco, 2020 Alumna
Priscilla Polanco, a Bisbee native, began her academic journey at Bisbee High School, graduating in 2019. After graduating, she attended Cochise College to pursue an associate degree in elementary education, which she calls one of her best decisions. "Cochise College was close to home, affordable, and a comfortable start," Priscilla reflects. She graduated in May 2020.
With her credits transferring, Priscilla continued her education at the University of Arizona, earning a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with an ESL endorsement. Following this, she embraced another opportunity—completing an accelerated master's program in Mild to Moderate Disabilities, graduating in May 2024.
"Each stage of my education opened new opportunities. I wouldn't have done it any other way at all. I'm so grateful for every opportunity. I am happy that I began at Cochise and worked my way up to the university."
