Our daughter is a second year med student at OHSU. They had their memorial service for the families of the people who donated their bodies for the betterment of education and science. They have a faculty/student choir that sings, and the ask students to write reflections that go into a book for the families. Our girl submitted this poem. I can’t even express how proud we are of her. Where would we all be without donors who knew what their donation could mean for future doctors and scientists?

👁 It's time for a spooky fact! A phobia of eyes is called ommetaphobia. Everyday situations such as making eye contact, being looked at, seeing images of eyes or even thinking of eyes can activate a fear response in those with the phobia.

We have Solar Eclipse glasses for your viewing safety on October 14th!

08/09/2023

We will have solar eclipse glasses available in the office from October 1st. We are requesting a $2 donation with all donations going to Breast Cancer 🎀 research.

Annular Solar Eclipse: October 14, 2023
The annular solar eclipse will cross North, Central and South America on Saturday, October 14, 2023. Beginning in the U.S., it will travel from the coast of Oregon to the Texas Gulf Coast and, weather permitting, it will be visible across the country.

The sun is never completely blocked by the moon during an annular solar eclipse – and it’s NEVER SAFE to look directly at the sun without proper eye protection.

Tips for viewing an annular solar eclipse:
Use approved solar eclipse viewers. The only safe way to view a partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as "eclipse glasses" or viewers that meet international standard ISO 12312-2 for safe viewing. Sunglasses, smoked glass, unfiltered telescopes or magnifiers, and polarizing filters are unsafe. Inspect your eclipse glasses or handheld viewer before use – if torn, scratched, or otherwise damaged, discard the device. If you can't find approved eclipse glasses, you can make a pinhole projector like this! https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/projection

Is your child set up for success in school?
“It is estimated that 1 in 10 children have vision problems that significantly affect their learning. Children with vision difficulties often develop other school related problems, such as:
*Behavioral- they tend to avoid school work or act out
*Learning related - they tend to have poor academic performance even though they may be bright and inquisitive
*Visual- they may develop blurry or double vision
These problems will persist unless addressed by a behavioral optometrist.” ~Optometric Extension Program Foundation

Today we pay tribute to the creator of one of the most recognized frame shapes in history:

Altina Schinasi (August 4, 1907 – August 19, 1999) was an American sculptor, filmmaker, entrepreneur, window dresser, designer, and inventor. She was best known for designing what she called the "Harlequin eyeglass frame", popularly known as cat-eye glasses.

Though she would continue to register patents for inventions until late in life, Schinasi's breakthrough came early on when she created and marketed the Harlequin eyeglass frame that defined glamour in the late 1930s. A walk down the street occasioned this design breakthrough; finding herself underwhelmed by the lacklustre frames in an optician's window, Altina set out to create a frame that conveyed whimsy, mystery and romance.

"Surely, there must be some way to design eyeglasses that could be attractive! What looks good on a face? What adds to a face? What could a woman wear on her face that would be romantic?" she wondered. Altina settled on the Harlequin mask as a starting point and began to cut masks into the frames she envisioned. Once she had set up production and negotiated deals with department stores, Schinasi opened an office where she oversaw marketing and distribution, later expanding her operation to the West Coast upon relocating to California. In 1939, Schinasi won the Lord & Taylor Annual American Design Award for her avant-garde transformation of the eyeglass frame into a proper fashion accessory. Vogue and Life magazines credited Schinasi with revolutionising the eye wear industry and aesthetic.
