It’s a joy to get to know families during prenatal visits. It’s the Midwifery way! Offering time and space for adults and kids to connect and play—and for occasional meltdowns. It’s all welcome here…play, fun, heartache, focus, hope, love, heartbreak, promise, worry, acceptance, turmoil, and peace…
Things are changing up in here! Not just the chilly weather but how I do some things in 2024!
I have been teaching childbirth ed for 5 years next year and I'm ready to change my offerings!
Prices are rising as my spaces prices have raised but from now on, Partner Prep is included in the cost of HypnoBirthing and my flagship class offering "Birthing Bravely"!
It will also not be a stand-alone class so no need to schedule another meeting day! Advanced comfort measure will be interwoven!
For HypnoBirthing Group Classes will be held on Wednesday Evenings and the last class will be held on Saturday so that we go over hands-on comfort measures with extended time together.
For Birthing Bravely, no more one-day classes! It will be broken up into 2 classes on Saturdays and Partner Prep Advanced Comfort Measures will be woven in the 2 shorter days we meet!
If you would like a private Partner Prep class then awesome! I can host ANY of my classes 1:1 to get some mindset coaching alongside your learning. Times we meet will be at mutually agreeable times. (No Sundays or Mondays.)
Also, I will no longer be offering things so often so be sure to sign up for the class that falls between 20-37 weeks of pregnancy! Can't wait to transform your experience through education and relaxation!!!
See you in class! What to learn about the differences between these 2 amazing classes? DM me or book a free call to see what is a better fit!

✨Small Business Saturday Update!✨
This year has brought lots of changes to Bean Tree Baby. It will be the first time since 2014 that we won't have a storefront space open for in-person shopping on Small Business Saturday and that's left me a little lost on how to plan for this weekend and sales. We actually opened our first storefront space on the weekend of Small Business in 2015, so it's always been an anniversary of sorts for us, and it's a bit weird for me to not have a storefront to celebrate in this Saturday.
But even though we won't have a physical space to welcome our local community into this weekend, we will still be having a store-wide sale online! The sale will run Friday thru Monday and will offer 20% off everything, even clearance items. I hope you'll take a look at the store to see if I have anything you need and support my small & local business if you can!
Stay tuned for a sale reminder on Friday... Feel free to start building your sale cart now, though!

Every birth offers a surprise—some more unwanted than others. Among the birth warrior’s pregnancy tasks is preparing for the unexpected through thoughtful prep in a safe space. The art and words of captures the essence of living in the aftermath of unwished-for surprises. Artwork offering the full range of Real—beyond imagery of glowing moms, parents, and birthers with serene babes in arms. 🙏🏼
Even though when deep in birth, when the verbal brain is far, far away, and the chance that you will read your mantras is low—the process of creating birth mantras is super helpful prebirth prep! You hold them within. And as I sat in one family’s space when invited to a birth as the second midwife, I read them and offered them silently, as they sank deeper into their work. This is my favorite! ❤️
Baby wearing, toys, cloth diapering…

CTG (aka continuous external fetal monitoring) has increased morbidity and mortality in childbirth and techno-fied the birth process in barbaric proportion.

It is well known in midwifery that the work of labor is '90% above the waist.' It is a Total Body-Mind-Heart-Energy experience. There isn’t much that can truly prepare for the totality of this experience. Labor IS the teacher. Birth warriors discover this reality along the way necessarily reckoning with the keen vulnerability and power required of them to surrender to their labor and birth process. The process wisely demands the birth warrior’s whole self.
It was an honor to witness this birth warrior as she dug deep, met many parts of herself, and kept going - supported by .forbin94, , and Midwife Angie. Welcome Back !

Labor and birth are filled with moments of reckoning: waiting, wondering, and wanting. In labor there are some universals although the experience is unique! Most people can look back on their labors and tell you their experience of pausing at and then passing through a few, or all, of these gates: The Gates of Great Excitement, Great Doubt, Great Determination, Holy Terror, and Great Surrender. This beautiful first photo portrays one such moment. It was an honor to join and supporting this family on their birthing journey.
If you’d like to learn more about the Gates of Labor check out The LabOrynth of Birth, by Pam England.

Welp.
Things have changed a bit.
For many years, you were told to “heat and beat” your breasts when there was a concern for a clogged duct or mastitis.
💥😳Hot shower, heavy massage, vibration. Kind of like moving a giant milk pimple.
Lots of research has directed a different path and understanding of the process.
It’s inflammation.
It’s all inflammatory.
So the supportive treatments should change.
B.A.I.T.
✔️Think of it like a sprained ankle.
✔️Breast Rest. Well, not stopping breastfeeding, but no “extra” b**b stuff. No super pumping, no crazy feeding. Just- normal- milk removal.
✔️Advil or Ibuprofen. Anti inflammatory, yes?
✔️Ice or cool packs. I like ice in a ziplock bag, wrapped in a pillowcase. On and off, every 20 minutes.
✔️Tylenol. More anti inflammatory. And pain reducing.
Don’t beat up the girls, just “shhhh” the breast. Gentle massage is ok.
And consider a good probiotic (good studies show lactobacillus fermentum and choline can help)
✔️🔥🔥of course if you have a fever, chills and a hot red, hard spot on your breast please call your HCP for probable mastitis antibiotics 🔥🔥
Then call us to manage your breastmilk removal and production.
We’ve got you.

greeted her Little💙 after completing that stellar workout called Labor! for which she intentionally prepared all along. And a pleasure to witness her evolving embrace of this experience as an ethereal rite of passage alongside and intertwined with the physical. With a commitment to changing her family’s birth legacy—
“It was my shortest labor yet at 13 hours and another successful VBAC. We add a special tally to our home’s history, with dozens of babies born and raised here over its 200+ years; with this being the first in this new century. A bright and healing chapter has begun and we are all enamored with this new being.” Many Blessings for now and beyond!
Celebrating this family with respect and admiration. grew through her pregnancy guided mostly by her own intuition and sourcing from those in her trusted spiritual friend-circle. And she birthed as she lives! She exquisitely narrated her experience moment to moment as she pushed out their baby, en caul, through the water and into her arms — awestruck by the thing she just did!!!!

Honoring the initiation of this lovely Mother. Joining as co-midwife for .click offered an opportunity to experience the strong presence of Love ❤️ and support within this blossoming family.
Feeling grateful to join other midwives and doulas while supporting birthing families.
The Caregiver Archetype familiar to many birth workers is rightfully kept in check by hearing “I did it!” instead of “I couldn’t have done this without you.”
“I DID IT” Is the epitome of Justine’s birth! Surrounded by her chosen birth team, in her own space, she pushed out her baby and welcomed him with wide eyes and in awe! 🥰
Midwives take continuing education to whole new levels. Congratulations Christy D'Aquila, CNM for earning your ASM with Midwives College of Utah. Magnolia Midwifery CT will be practicing as a CNM and CPM in Connecticut.
An honor to walk this path with you in every single way 💋
The childbearing year looks a bit different with each pregnancy. I will act as your guide, a mentor, & watchful eye, & to help you gather your support people along the way. You will be supported, challenged, & forever changed. – With certainty you will be called to go places you did not intend to go. This bears repeating so you will hear me say this again & again. I cannot guarantee your outcomes. -- For most people, homebirth with midwifery care is taking a stance for or against something. For some it represents ancestral rite, religious or body autonomy, ideas about government and authority, the source of true knowledge, resisting patriarchy, personal strength, resisting white supremacy, a disbelief in medical-technocratic healthcare, resisting racist and colonialist institutions, survival of humanity & connection to earth, or something else. -- If your birth outcome represents these huge & important statements to yourself & society, you may mistakenly feel like you’ve failed the very essence of who you are because things do not turn out the way you want. This leads to shame, trauma, guilt, & blame. The truth is, you can still believe & represent, & give birth fiercely while staying true to your values, whatever the outcome. Preparing for birth with midwifery care is about soul integrity. Prepare in a way that allows you to keep living, fighting, resisting while you grieve your ideal of the perfect pregnancy, birth, babyfeeding, parenting, performance. The ideal never matches reality! The task of pregnancy prep is opening wide to the vulnerability of creation, new love, a hopeful vision of the future which also means opening to the unknown, to challenges you will surely encounter along the way. We prepare concretely for all the things you do & don’t want. We prepare energetically for facing the unknown in ways that match your truth. It requires a love-warrior stance. It's an opportunity for deep growth. My goal for you is to move forward always in self-love prepared with knowledge, practices, connection to others, & fierceness to do whatever needs to be done, as you are called, while in this rite of passage experience!
Sharing photos of this labor with great tenderness. We shared funny, sad, puzzled, curious, angry, and proud moments during pregnancy and birth. It was an honor to support this mom (and family) as she navigated her journey to becoming mother of two!
GBS testing is one of the more extended informed decision-making conversations I have with clients prenatally which leads to exploring overall body wellness, the pros, and cons of first-trimester urine cultures, 3rd-trimester testing, no testing, positives, negatives, with or without antibiotic treatment in labor, and making these decisions within midwifery care and within the predominate medicalized birthing culture. Dr. Wickham's site is a welcomed resource!
Some people ask why group B strep screening isn't offered to all pregnant women in the UK.
That question is in the UK news today, as proponents of routine GBS screening complain that hospitals don't want to participate in new research in this area.
But a 2019 review published in the British Medical Journal has already showed that universal antenatal screening for the group B strep bacteria can cause more harm than good.
The reviewers found that universal screening for group B strep "would have led to overtreatment of 138 583 (99.75%) women in labour."
The treatment for having GBS bacteria consists of giving intravenous (by drip) antibiotics during labour.
But very, very few babies would have a problem and the antibiotics have side effects.
Not just for the mums and babies who are exposed to them, but for future mums, babies and families.
Having a drip can also mean that movement is limited and in some areas having GBS bacteria and/or the treatment for this can limit your options.
It's tricky though, because GBS disease can be fatal for a tiny number of babies.
But as with so many things, there's a bigger picture and wider issues to consider. Some babies are more at risk than others, for example.
So this is an area where it's important to weigh up the pros and cons in the light of YOUR individual situation.
If you’d like to know more about group B strep, your options, the wider issues and how to weigh up what's right for you, take a look at www.sarawickham.com/gbse
That page has details of my book on this topic – which helps parents, professionals and others to understand the issues and the evidence relating to the screening and prophylactic measures offered in the hope of preventing early-onset group B strep (EOGBS) disease.
It also contains a link to my information hub, where you can read about this study and many others.
Support midwifery and birthing options is CT by signing this petition. Danbury expresses concern over safety using their investigative powers toward that end. The medical-institutional power differential and history of midwifery suppression to the benefit of white, male, colonialist pedagogy has a very long history dating back to (and way before) the rise of Medicine in this country and the move of births into hospitals. There are countless incidences of looking away and keeping-on in institutional settings while not addressing practice issues that cause harm. There are countless incidences of cow-towing to loud practitioners who hold power, who do harm, who recommend non-evidenced based practices and warn against evidenced based approaches, and who raise their indignant voices with obvious practice and club bias. Stand with community midwives and community birth. Speak up to highlight CT statutes which burden the process of creating more freestanding birth centers, midwifery access to hospital privileges, and smooth access to emergency care for community birthing families.
