This summer the Sanford PROMISE Teen Science Cafe Leadership team has been part of the catalyst program through the Teen Science Cafe Network. They learned about professionalism, leadership, and event planning. They have some great ideas for this school year so save the first Tuesday of every month for hanging with the TSC team and learning some interesting science!

The theme for this summer has been science communication. We had many scientists present to students and teachers to help them better understand the field of biomedical research. We also had students from middle school to college working on projects to better understand science, which they presented to the public. A lot of good work done this summer!

That's a wrap on the 2024 PROMISE scholar session. These four students have developed skills in science inquiry, lab technique, communication, and networking. Yesterday, they presented their research at the SD EPSCoR symposium, which brought together students from across the state who participated in research. Thank you to the mentors who helped them through this experience. De La Puente Lab, Kareta Lab, Pilaz Lab, and Vermeer Lab.

Sanford Research camp teaches students about DNA and ancestry Sanford Research hosted a summer camp for students earlier this week to learn more about DNA, their unique ancestry and traits.
Finding Your Roots Camp is off to a great start. Join us for Family Day on July 26th 1-3pm for a poster session to hear what they learned about their ancestry and genetic traits.
We had a great time with teachers this week for our Microscopy Professional Development. These teachers learned all about modern microscopy and how it is used in research. Thank you to the Roux Lab and Chandrasekar Lab for sharing your knowledge!
Last week, seven high school students participated in Research in Action, a program designed to give students a chance to shadow an undergraduate student at Sanford Research. One participant said, "I thought it was an amazing experience! I loved being able to do so many things hands on and it really helped me further understand what I want to be when I'm older."
This week we were able to work with Aspire by Sanford to host Natasha Presler for a teacher externship through the Department of Education. Natasha is a CTE teacher at Brandon Valley High School. She spent the day learning about Batten Disease research with the Weimer Lab , histology core services, and toured the Sanford Laboratory facility.
It's and we have a lot going on in the PROMISE lab to help students learn about the work done at Sanford Research. On Tuesday we held the last of five Jedi Genetics summer programs for middle school students. We had fun learning about genetic testing and biomarker testing.
Meet the Teen Science Cafe leaders for the 2024-25 school year! This group of students has been selected to be part of the catalyst program. They will take part in a series of courses to help them learn leadership and planning skills. During the school year, they will be in charge of planning and executing the cafes, as well as doing some data recording and blogs. It's going to be a great school year!
The Teen Science Cafe Network has helped to support our cafe and we are so thankful to be part of this group. Teen Science Cafes are a great way to engage teens in your area and connect them to STEM professionals. This program is a great way to get started!
The Teen Science Cafe Fellows initiative is a ten-month training program to help educators implement . Fellows receive support to launch a cafe program and host 3 events, along with a $2,500 stipend. Learn more and apply by August 1.

Meet Makarie! Makarie is involved in FFA, Student Council, Cheerleading, Band, NHS, and many different sports. "I applied to be a Sanford PROMISE Scholar because I read that they allow high school students to be fully immersed in the lab environment and wanted to experience it."
We had a great time hosting students from the CTE Academy Health Care Camp. This camp explores many different health care careers. Research is an integral part of health care as it helps to improve the standard of care for patients. These students learned about the role of genotyping in developing model organisms.
Meet Prithvi! "'I've always been fascinated by science, from learning about cells in middle school to exploring different roles of proteins in high school biology. Naturally, the opportunity offered at Sanford to delve deeper into science and expand my knowledge excites me."
Meet Betelihiem! She is excited to be part of the Sanford PROMISE Scholar program. "I cannot wait to have hands on experience within laboratories and to take part in a positive learning environment."
