Congratulations to Shee Atiká shareholder, Marlis Boord!

Graduate Spotlight!

Congratulations to Sealaska scholarship recipient Shakagóok Marlis Boord, who just earned her master's degree!

Marlis is from the Teikweidée clan with Angoon roots through her mother, Séetlein, Melonie Boord and grandmother Gaaw, Pauline Duncan (Kookesh). Her father is Clancy Boord, Duk. aan, an Aleut adopted into Kiks.ádi by Marlis’ maternal grandfather Albert F. Duncan. Marlis was born and raised on Tlingit Aaní in Sitka, Alaska.

"My family would tell me 'It took a village to raise you.' And it’s true, it took a village of role models to help me get to where I am today, graduating from the University of Alaska Anchorage with a master’s degree in public health. I’m so thankful to my brother Mitchell Boord, aunts, uncles, parents, grandparents, cousins, and family friends for all your love and support. I’m truly grateful to my corporations and tribal entities for the scholarship support as well. Gunalchéesh!"

Congratulations Shakagóok!

Shareholder and former Chairman of the Board for Shee Atiká. Dr. Pam Steffes is an amazing optometrist and a great person!

“When I started optometry school, there were only about 25% women in the field, and there were very few American Indians/Alaska Natives. I felt very alone when they released the national demographics. They reported 0% AI/AN students in optometry school. I said, “That can’t be right,” because I am a student. The reply was that there were not enough AI/AN students to be reported with

CORRECTION: This year’s annual report to shareholders contains an incorrect statement in the feature on the life of Charlie Joseph, Sr. (Kaal.átk’) and his namesake award. The source material for this short narrative was based on an original informational brochure created with Charlie’s family, which includes a line about his loving marriage to Annie. However, the edited text in the annual report wrongly suggests that Charlie had reservations about marrying Annie, which is incorrect. We sincerely apologize to the Joseph family for this error. We have shared this correction with shareholders at our recent Shareholder Information Meetings in Anchorage and Seattle, and will continue to do so at the Juneau meeting on June 5. We have been assured by the family that the brochure information is accurate and we’ve given our assurance that any future edits will be reviewed by the family for accuracy. Click the link to read the full Charlie Joseph, Sr. (Kaal.átk’) Award brochure in its entirety.
