“I’ve had some pretty weird dates with some pretty status-obsessed guys. One guy I went out with immediately told me, unprompted, that he grew up very rich, in a 20,000 sq/ft house. I liked his confidence but found his approach a little crass. Another guy I went on an even more recent date with was eager to tell me about how much money he had (like literally, in his bank account) and what kind of car he had (a Range Rover). I guess I’m bringing this up because I find it kind of tacky and unnecessary. As a wise songstress once said, ’THAT DON’T IMPRESSA ME MUCH!’ The older I get the more I understand that good people don’t really care about how much money you have, they’re more interested in how you make them feel and whether you’re a good person or not. As people age we bond over our commonalities, our relationships with our families, the loss of loved ones, being there for each other when life is terrible. Money and status may factor into who’s around us, but they’re not what we actually care about. I was lucky enough to be raised in a way that I knew people from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. Status wasn’t so much a thing where I grew up, so I’m oddly comfortable with people who grew up with nothing and people who grew up with a lot more than they needed. I’ve known a lot of brilliant wealthy people, and a lot of rich idiots. I’ve also known a good number of genius lower income people (and some not-so-genius ones too). I guess my point is have some tact when you talk about money and class, especially when first meeting someone. If you think your wealth is one of your best selling points, let people find out about it naturally over time. That’s so much more mysterious and s*xy. Somehow assuming that I’m going to care that you’re rich assumes that I think rich people are better than poor people, which I don’t because I’m not a classist *sshole. Anyway, it’s pretty easy to be a good person. Have some subtlety, respect working people, don’t be obnoxious about money. AND EAT THE RICH! Okay bye.”
