Just a small dent in the snapdragons I’m planting out today. 😅

I don’t think I’ve ever considered seed saving as a form of self care, but this year it’s been an oddly relaxing way to spend the evenings after the kids are in bed. 😌

Pictured: A large pile of zinnia petal seeds and a few disc seeds in the foreground.

Morning dew. These colors are 🔥😍.

Adding harvest lisianthus to the to do list. 😍

Fall is tomorrow 😱 and that list keeps growing instead of getting shorter. 😅😅

Making some new dahlias!

I’m wanting specific crosses this year instead of letting the bees have a free for all. Those dahlias are covered with organza bags to prevent the bees from beating me to it and once they open, I’ll cross pollinate with a paint brush. Even then, dahlia genetics are wildly unpredictable but 🤞🏻🤞🏻 for something awesome.

Harvested the last of the nigella pods. 😍 Still need to pluck off the spent petals before they’re bouquet ready.

There’s something about each season that I love but fall is 💯 my favorite. The texture, the moodier blooms (hello, burgundy dahlias!)… and the sense of accomplishment as another growing year starts to to wind down.

These cool nights make me feel like fall will be here shortly. Then I check the forecast and see that 90°F day we’re going to have this weekend. 🥵🥵 I swear, all of us in the PNW complain about the rain all winter and spring… and then complain about the heat once it’s here. 😂

Did you know that some dahlia varieties have shimmery petals? The iridescence is caused by larger cells on the surface of the petals that reflect light. Or fairies. 🧚🏼‍♂️

Me: I need a cute, witty caption.
Brain: I LIKE BIG BUDS AND I CANNOT LIE.
Me: Ugh, no, not that.
Brain: I.LIKE.BIG.BUDS.

Each time one of the dahlias new to me this year blooms, I say I have a new favorite. But I’m thinking it’s for real this time. 😍😍

Threw this together for our new neighbors. Trying to make up for our annoying rooster. 😆

There is no better stress relief than walking through the garden, cutting and creating as I go. No buckets, no tables, nothing quick about it.

Apparently growing fake flowers here. 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️

Fencing might keep out the deer but it’s certainly no match for a kiddo blowing dandelion seeds. 🌼

I had the BEST time playing with flowers yesterday at Alicia’s new studio, Fleurs Creative Studio. Thrilled to have her close here in Snohomish. 💕

(Flowers not grown by me.)

Might not look like much, but these buds mean ranunculus will be blooming soon. ✨🎉

Happy Mother’s Day! I hope that you’re all being celebrated today and every day!

Holding space today for those that have a complicated relationship with days like today as well. 💜

05/02/2022

Mother’s Day is coming up and in addition to sleeping in, I bet the gift of weekly, seasonal flowers would be greatly appreciated. 😉

I won’t be offering individual bouquets this weekend… I’ll be celebrating my baby sister getting married! 🎉 So grab a flower subscription and gift some of the best blooms to the best mom. (And if that’s yourself, I’m not going to judge. Keep rockin’ it!)

“Why are you taking a photo of my front steps?”

My friend Caitlin replied, “Because most people have Amazon packages on their doorstep. You have all this.”

Let’s be honest, there’s usually packages there too. 😂

dropped by to catch up and I got to show her the tiny lisianthus and first anemone bloom 🎉 plus a walk through the garden to see peonies popping up and roses leafing out. It won’t be long before I can share these with you too.

What a rollercoaster this week has been. 80 degrees to snow flurries, on and off hail (which means a race to pull hardening off seedlings inside), the first tulip bloom 🎉, a toddler that’s fighting naps (my prime flower time), and our first brush with crop failure… I’m just a little bit stressed over here. 😅

On a recent walk through the gardens (I’m trying this out since it feels a little more fitting than ‘farm’ 😂), I noticed signs of Botrytis tulipae aka Tulip Fire, a fungal disease, in one of the tulip beds. I’ve combed over the other beds and snipped off a few suspect leaves but I’m fairly certain it’s contained. Good news is that it won’t affect subscriptions and 🤞🏻🤞🏻 that we will still be able to offer additional bouquets. Extra good news is that it supposedly doesn’t affect other plants and we didn’t have other flowers growing in that area yet. Bad news is that it put a big dent in our favorite double tulips. I know this isn’t Instagram glamorous, but neither is growing flowers sometimes. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Every day, more and more tulips are getting buds. It won’t be long now! There are a few tulip subscriptions left if you want some on your table every week. 😉

Whew! For the second (or third? 😩) week in a row, I’ve been playing catch up so I don’t get behind. First I was sick, and now I’m recovering from (very) minor surgery. Luckily, I had this guy to help me dig some holes for the roses we’re adding this year. Don’t worry, we don’t (usually) let him use power tools unattended. 🤪

03/23/2022

It was a race to get all of my lisianthus in before the sun set. I only wish every complaint I have about the rain brought sunshine!

The boys are convinced that there are wooly mammoth (🦣 whaaat? There’s a wooly mammoth emoji? 😂) fossils in our garden. Hopefully this plays out before that bed is planted. 😅

How did you spend the glorious afternoon yesterday?

Photos from Snotown Stems's post 03/22/2022

Earlier this year, I came across the cutest little truck (a 1984 Cushman Truckster to be exact) on Facebook Marketplace and thought it would be perfect to use in lieu of a flower stand.

My friend, Lisa, made the most amazing mock-up for a spiffy new paint job (😍😍) and I can’t wait until we get started. Will it look like this when we’re finished? Hopefully! Neither one of us have painted a vehicle before. 😂 However, I will be beyond thrilled if it ends up even remotely close.

03/21/2022

HAPPY SPRING!! 🌱🌷

After being sick all week, it was nice to get outside, even if it was spent putting up temporary deer fencing around the expanded rose garden in the rain. I know this is typical PNW weather but I’m hoping for some sunshine soon. 😩🤞🏻

When your helper isn’t very good at helping…

It’s always fun trying to get things done with this guy around. 😂

03/15/2022

Was able to get a few beds tilled this morning before the rain moved in. Who needs a lawn when you can have a field of flowers? 🌷🌷🌷

02/28/2022

Feather Locklear on her nest of stolen eggs. Please move. We’re not raising babies this year. 🚫🐣

Spent the day at the Volunteer Park Conservatory greenhouses in Seattle propagating heirloom chrysanthemums with some fellow flower friends. 🌱🤓

Can’t wait to have this one for bouquets this fall. 😍
