Our Story
Somerset Cross Country welcomes runners from grades k-12. Cross country is a fall sport with meets beginning late August and the state meet in November.
Meets are usually held on Saturday mornings or on Tuesday evenings. Most of our meets are either in Somerset at the Somersplash Waterpark cross country course or within an hour's drive. A schedule will be posted in August.
There are three general age divisions for meets: Elementary (Grades 1-6), Middle School (Grades 7-8), and High School (9-12). However the older runners in their division may "run up" occasionally. (For example a 6th grader can run on the middle school team, or an 8th grader can run varsity.)
Elementary - Their race is typically 1.1 mile, but sometimes it is 2k (about 1.24 miles) and occasionally it's 1 mile. Their race is usually the first race at a cross country meet.
Middle School - The middle school race is typically 1.8 miles or 3k.
High School - The varsity and JV race is a 5k (3.1 miles)
Cross country is a team sport that requires a minimum of five runners to make up a team (but we have no limit on how many can be on the team). Anyone who wants to run and is willing to work can be on the team. Girls and boys do not compete against each other.
We encourage athletes from other sports to participate. In conditioning we build stamina and speed. Runners can expect to work up to running at least 2-3 times their race distance in practice.
