1 in 100 people will experience schizophrenia, which is often described as a type of psychosis. This , it’s important to highlight the common misconceptions of schizophrenia.

👥 Schizophrenia means ‘split personality’ - people with this condition don’t have split or multiple personalities.
⚠️ People with schizophrenia are dangerous - most people with schizophrenia aren’t violent and are more likely to be victims of violence.
🧠 Schizophrenia can’t be treated - people may need long term support but the condition can be treated.

We started Mental Health Awareness Week in 2001 as an annual event for the UK to come together to focus on good mental health for all 💚

Each May, millions of people across the UK take part in campaigning for the prevention of mental health problems.

Above all else, Mental Health Awareness Week keeps up the need for change and encourages us all to take action to prioritise the UK's mental health.

If you’ve seen someone who you think might need some help, trust your instincts and start a conversation with them. Here are some simple steps to help you. A little bit of small talk could save someone’s life.

1️⃣ Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel quite right, try to start a conversation with them.

2️⃣ Try not to worry about saying the wrong thing. Whatever you say won't make it worse.

3️⃣ Ask a question. Something like ‘do you know where I can get a coffee?’ could be all it takes to help interrupt someone’s suicidal thoughts.

4️⃣ Ask them if they’re OK or if they need help.

5️⃣ Encourage them to sit down somewhere safe and quiet.

6️⃣ Ask them if there’s someone you could call for them.

7️⃣ Mention other sources of help, like Samaritans, their GP, or their friends and family.

We’re bringing young people to Parliament in March, and they want to tell MPs to for mental health support. We’ve booked the room. Help us make sure your MP is in it.

Decision makers need to listen to young people’s stories and experiences of the mental health system. They need to listen when they ask them to make young people’s mental health a priority. Invite your MP to our event to make sure young people’s voices are heard. ➡ https://bit.ly/3E54BuE
