I create textile collages under the label of TeeCee Stitchery. Inspired by the quilters of Gee’s Bend, my textile collages are contemporary and made through traditional methods of stitching, embroidery, dyeing and more.

Each piece is a one-of-a-kind design and made from old clothes, neglected ties, torn denim, upholstery samples and abandoned fabric. By salvaging these pieces, I take items destined for the landfill and transform them into works of art.

Rachel Freudenburg is one of our new studio members. Come and see her work during our New Members Show!

Exhibition dates: Sept 6th-28th

Image: “Interruptions” 2023, small weaving with found wire

In each, a piece of found metal wire defines a shape that is different from, or interrupts, the main field.
Life is a series of interruptions. Some are pleasant surprises, some are devastating, and others are simply annoying. How I understand and respond to these interruptions matters a great deal. This series explores a variety of interruptions, and how to move and grow through them.
Here is one way of looking at these pieces: Just slightly bigger than my (admittedly large) cell phone, “Interruptions” oppose and question the constant interruptions and distractions we tolerate as the price for engaging with the Internet and social media. But different technologies evoke different responses in us: Distraction and the stimulation of never satisfied desire activated by the screen versus an art weaving’s invitation to contemplation and deeper self-reflection on the other.

Exhibition dates: Sept 6th-28th
Opening reception: Friday, Sept. 6th, 6-8 pm

Image: Canal Grande, Venice, 2023, Photograph, gelatin silver print.

“Echos in Stone” explores how human-made structures shape collective memory. From the tranquil beauty of Venice’s canals to the Fascist architecture of Rome’s EUR district, this series captures long, foreboding shadows—reminders of Italy’s darker history. Through observation, it confronts the echoes of the past, inviting a nuanced reinterpretation of these architectural masterpieces.

There’s a lot coming up at Washington Street!

In July, we will be featuring the work of Shay Culligan. Culligan’s FIGURAVOLUTION tracks the evolution of his portrait paintings from figurative realism towards modernist abstraction. It is the culmination of several years of experimentation in styles. It also represents a personal revolution for him as he no longer feels confined within the structures of representational realism.

Opening this Friday, May 31st at Washington Street Gallery: CONVERSATIONS: An Exhibition of Work by Jennifer Erbe and Carolyn Muskat.

Jennifer and Carolyn have been friends for over 40 years. As artists, they have had thousands of conversations about their work and their ideas. They have both focused on expressing the world around them in visual ways – each from their own unique perspective. Their work sometimes overlaps and highlights parallel interests; sometimes it creates a discourse in opposition. This exhibition showcases a selection of work that has been sparking recent conversations between them about content, media and the act of making images.

Opening reception: Friday, May 31st, 6-8 pm
Galley hours: Saturday and Sunday 12-4
Exhibition is open until June 30th
