Viloma Pranayama is a great practice to learn how to control your breath and prepare you for many other types of pranayama that allow you to harness the power of breath and energy.
The first stages of this practice are done lying down comfortably with either a block under your head or a bolster the long way underneath you (tucked up to your sacrum and under your head) to make sure there is a tilt in your tailbone/your pelvis is tilted forward so your diaphragm works effectively. Students are encouraged to cover their eyes (with a towel or eye mask) and let the mind focus on the breath.
Stage 1 involves disrupting or breaking up the in-breath over the course of a suggested 30 seconds. But we’ll start simply so as to not expire, and break the breath into 3 parts—bottom, middle and top. Begin by expelling all the breath out. Then breathe in 1/3, pause for a 1-3 count, breathe in another 1/3, pause for a 1-3 count, and breathe in fully the remaining 1/3rd of your inhale, pause for a 1-3 count. Then exhale slowly an ujjayi breath. Complete 2-4 cycles to begin your pranayama/breath control practice.
Stage 2 involves disrupting the exhale—we’ll use the 3 segments here too. Begin by inhaling all the way to the top of your inhale. Pause. Then breathe out the top 3rd, pause for a 1-3 count, breathe out the middle 3rd, pause for a 1-3 count, and breathe out fully the remaining bottom 3rd, pause for a 1-3 count. Then inhale slowly an ujjayi breath. Complete 2-4 cycles to begin your pranayama/breath control practice.
As this becomes more and more comfortable combine disrupting the inhales and exhales, returning to ujjayi breath any time you need. Then we do this practice seated. We eventually add uddiyana bandha and mula bandha. And then longer holds.
Start simple. Steady breath, steady mind.

IT’S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE IT’S CAT SCIENCE
PRANAYAMA FUN FACT: Vibrational energy of a cat’s purr registers from 25 – 150 hz (vibrations per second) and expedites recovery from injury, relieves stress, reduces pain, promotes bone health, stimulates healing (to fight infection, reduce swelling, repair muscle and connective tissue, etc.). It also helps to lowers blood pressure and reduces stress and pain in humans.
Just like us humans, cats can contract muscles in their larynx and diaphragm to create energetic vibration as breath goes in and out. AKA pranayama.
Don’t have a cat? Can’t drag your cat to work? No problem! Just breathe. You can make your own vibrations—we recommend UJJAYI or BEE BREATH: try gently contracting the muscles in your throat while you breathe slowly IN and out…or…try long ujjayi breaths in and making a loooooooong buzzing sound on the breath out.
Come breathe with us in studio. No cats, but we promise similar soothing side effects. beinunion.com/schedule

Ujjayi breath creates vibrations in the larynx, stimulating the vagus nerve, signaling your body to relax. Here’s a visual of how vibrational energy (sound) works to re-pattern matter. Get breathing and surround yourself with good energy! (…and pump up the jam!)
