Let’s talk about food waste! While it’s not so glamorous, this is a big piece of our closed loop farming system. We work hard to plant appropriately and sell what we grow, but some years we are left with an excess of certain crops. Before we compost, we look for other ways to use this food. A few of our favorites are our good friends at and Tabitha at Terroir in a Jar will turn our Santa Rosa plums and Dapple Dandy pluots into incredible jams that we sell to our customers. And grey bears will donate our extra summer squash back to the community. Everyone plays a part!

Dry Farm Tomatoes! What makes them so special? Once planted, these tomatoes get no irrigation! Our central coast climate makes us an ideal zone to grow these, as we have adequate winter rain, with cool summer mornings and hot afternoons. These tomatoes require special soil management in the spring prior to planting to ensure they will conserve the water they scavenge. The plants will grow roots up to 8 feet long in search of nutrients and water! All of this results in a flavorful and nutrious tomato. These tomatoes are often more flavorful as they don’t fill their fruit with water. More information is available through CASFS

Tuesday trivia answer! We are brewing up some tasty compost tea! This is a mixture of a variety of nutrients (including worm castings, fish hyrdolysate, kelp, ect) that is then “brewed” to create this “tea”. We use the system pictured here to add the tea to our irrigation to give our plants a bump of vital nutrients. As the summer goes on, the nutrients in the soil become depleted so adding this is a form of organic fertilizer. AND Fun fact! It’s called compost tea since another way to make it involves a very large tea bag, compost, and a few days of brewing. 🤎😊🌱

Answer to last weeks trivia! These are Pippin apples and this time of year we “thin” all our apples. This involves removing the smaller apples in the bunch only leaving 1-2. This lets the remaining fruit grow much larger and helps prevents pest in the remaining fruit. If you’re going to do this on your trees at home, be sure to thin when the apples are smaller than a golf ball, and remove the smallest fruit. We can’t wait for apple season! 🍏

TUESDAY TRIVIA! What fruit is pictured here? And why would it be beneficial for farmers to pick off these unripe fruit leaving only 1-2 per cluster left to mature? Let us know your thoughts in the comments! More than one correct answer 😜

Trivia Tuesday ANSWER! ✨these little yellow specs you may see on your produce is honey bee p**p! 🐝 while many of you may find that a bit gross, rest assured it’s not harmful and means your produce is coming from a healthy organic farm that supports a large honey bee population. Despite washing our green multiple times, this stuff is difficult to remove. But if you see it on your produce, don’t worry! Who knows…it may even have health benefits! Always remember…

TRIVIA TUESDAY!! Our social media executive has been on vacation…but she’s back and so is trivia Tuesday! This week we have….WHAT is this yellow squiggle that you might see on your greens you buy from the stand? A few pictures to describe what we are talking about. Let us know what you think in the comments!!

Tuesday trivia answer!! That was a bit of a trick question…so thanks to everyone who took a guess. That seed was a lettuce seed that was coated in “National Organic Program” (NOP) compliant coating. Lettuce seeds are very small so this coating helps up plant, not waste seeds, and provide a more stable environment for the seed to germinate in. If you’re curious about NOP compliant seeds, check out FAQ section. This year we are growing 3 types of head lettuce which you can buy at the farm stand, open Friday-Sunday 10-5.

Trivia Tuesday! This may or may not be a trick question….but we have a pretty smart following on here 😜. What seeds are pictured here? Clue: there’s more than one right answer! Let us know your best guesses!

Tuesday Trivia!! Do recognize this bulb? What is it and do you plant these at home?

04/24/2024

Answer to Tuesday Trivia! They are tomato plants! We will be selling some select heirloom varieties this weekend, with more coming next week! We have planted dry farms, heirlooms, and some fun cherry tomato varieties and can’t wait for tomato season to kick off. Our farmer Dan is most excited for a new variety he is trying, Green Bee!
