Last week’s downside surprise in the US June CPI print amid a gradual cooling of the labor market has prompted many analysts to expect the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates twice this year. The market is currently pricing September and December moves, followed by three cuts in 2025.

Fed Chairman Jerome Powell yesterday said that the latest economic data suggests that inflation is getting back on a downward path, however he emphasized (yet again) that officials need more evidence before lowering interest rates. Whilst he did not give any insight into the timing of the first interest rate cut, Powell did acknowledge that the central bank has made “quite a bit of progress” in reducing inflation.

The UK has a significant day ahead tomorrow with their election day.
