Two fires north of Lake Tahoe keeping firefighters busy 11PM Update: Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District is reporting progress on the Quilicy Fire. It is now 400 acres in size. The fire was started by a vehicle fire on I-80 and they ask the public to avoid the Gold Ranch/Verdi area. Eastbound Interstate 80 is currently closed at the state line.

Knight, a wealthy Chicago widow who purchased this then-isolated site and had it constructed into a Norse fortress from 800 A.D, Vikingsholm represents unique blend of art and history.

The Jeffrey Pine is the most common tree in the Lake Tahoe Basin. It has longer needles than any other pine in the Basin (7-11” long). Its bark is distinctive from all other pines because of strong resins which give the bark a vanilla or pineapple odor. If you think you’re looking at a Jeffrey, put your nose right up to the bark and take a sniff!

Fannette is the only island to be found in all of Lake Tahoe. It is located in beautiful Emerald Bay on the west shore of the lake. A sparsely timbered, brush covered upthrust of granite that rises 150 feet above the water, Fannette Island was not always known by that name. During the past 100 years it has been known as Coquette, Fannette, Baranoff, Dead Man's, Hermit's, and Emerald Isle. Fannette was the name that finally stuck.
