Carotid artery disease is typically found by screening the arteries in your neck. One in three strokes is caused by the disease breaking off the carotid artery and traveling to your brain, potentially causing a stroke.
Transcarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) was associated with a lower risk of in-hospital stroke or death (1.6% vs. 3.1%) over the transfemoral approach among patients receiving treatment for carotid stenosis. At one year TCAR was again shown to provide lower risk of ipsilateral stroke or death (5.1% vs. 9.6%). The transcarotid method was associated with a higher risk of access site complication (1.3% vs 0.8%) resulting in interventional treatment. The transfemoral approach resulted in more radiation.

Did you know September is a Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) month? PAD is caused by a hardening of arteries
Plaque in the inner lining of the arteries in the extremities can cause limb pain and other ailments like sores.
If untreated, it can lead to amputation
In serious cases, PAD may cause gangrene which can lead to the amputation of a limb
It is highly treatable
Habit changes such as quitting smoking and a healthier diet can help treat PAD but for serious cases medication and surgery may be necessary.
Symptoms are often mistaken for other things
The symptoms of PAD often start as fatigue and general leg pain, leading many to undiagnosed diseases.
Risk increases with age
While health factors can increase risk of PAD at any age, the older the patient is, the higher risk they are for PAD.
