Last week, Tanzania celebrated a national HPV awareness week!
Our nurse Marselina did an in-service at two of the primary schools in Ndoombo. Discussed and educated students on the importance of the vaccine and preventing HPV. Following the class, about 100 students received the vaccine. 🤩
Thank you Marselina for your hard work and to the schools for giving us the opportunity for to care for the children.
Asante!

Asanteni sana!
These wonderful volunteers from Wisconsin were at the dispensary two weeks ago to help with public health initiatives like blood pressure, blood sugar and vision screenings across the life span and a small distribution of food to those in the community most in need.
We thank you for your time and efforts and hope to see you back with us again! Karibu 😊
Asante sana , VHI, and Dr Frank Same!! Already you have made differences in the lives of many. The patients are elated with how their vision is progressing and how sight is returning. What a gift sight is.
With the help from our partners at Vision Health International the first group of cataracts surgery recipients has been done! 10 total surgeries and follow up appointments completed. Everyone on their healing journey and seeing better than when they started.
What a wonderful gift of sight!
Thank you to the supports of MMTHC and VHI! We couldn’t do it without you.

First clinic day on Sunday was a success! All thanks to our friends from VHI (Vision Health International). We are honored and privileged to begin this partnership.
Together with the clinic Mt. Meru Tumaini Health Clinic staff and 11 volunteer translators they saw 110 patients across the lifespan. We surpassed our goal day one, and coordinated eye exams, provided glasses and identified patients in need of higher level of care surgeries and referrals.
The first day is always a rush as the flow comes together. Here are a few of the pictures. Look out for more to come!

Tahadhari!

Meet Brite.
An 11 year old brought to us by his mother after having fallen from a tree. She was worried because he was complaining of a lot of back pain. Even though we didn’t have all the resources at our facility, our staff and volunteers stopped at nothing to help Brite get the imaging he needed.
First he was taken to Patandi, another dispensary at the base of the mountain. Unfortunately their x-ray was under maintenance, so our team took him into Arusha to an AICC hospital to get the imaging done.
Fortunately, he suffered minor injuries and will recover soon.
This is the reality of the mountain. Resources may not be close by or could take days to get too. As we expand our resources and offerings, we strive to bring quality care to our community.
Like any organization we are always looking for improvements. Our staff and patients are our best resource and we like to tap into them!
Yesterday afternoon our staff and Dr. Valerie (from our US board) had a wonderful lunch from and discussed how we can better serve our community and strengthen our dispensary.
We also gained a new birthing chair! We are excited for the changes this year has brought us and look forward to more.
It’s polio vaccination time! 💊
Nurse Furaha was out in the community giving oral polio vaccinations to children under 5 in part of the government’s second launch of vaccinations.
In May, Tanzania launched its second round of vaccinations against wild polio with support from WHO, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, UNICEF and health partners.
The first round of vaccinations reached over 1 MILLION children in four regions! 🤩
Thank you to everyone who came out to support, and to those who volunteered their time in setting up!The concert was a success. Approx $2500 was raised towards our goal for expanding our dispensary staff. Asante! 😊
We are excited for you to join us! 😊
Food and beverages served following the performance. Along with the boutique with many unique gifts!

Our Story
Mount Meru Health Clinic is a fulfillment of a long time dream of the late Rev. Moses Isaac Mbise. Rev. Mbise started working as a young pastor in and around Ndoombo Mfulony on the slopes of Mt. Meru. Being a pastor in this area meant more than just doing the pastoral duties of preaching the word, baptizing, marrying, sharing communion and counseling. It meant being a peace keeper i.e. (family fighting – go to Moses), crisis resolution counselor, preacher, comforter, and also teacher. Rev. Mbise served among the poor and when he was not delivering a sermon, he was resolving household conflict, conducting a funeral for a child whose life was taken prematurely by illnesses that are preventable in the rest of the world where health care is available to the people in need. Lack of healthcare facility for people living in and around Mt. Meru area had consumed many innocent lives. Lack of healthcare facility was complicated even more by lack of transportation infrastructure as many people live in areas where there are no roads to speak of and therefore cut off from the rest of the country and the world. Things like safe water, hospitals, clinics, plumbing, cars, and roads, are luxuries that many of these communities don’t have. Many had to walk great distances to a nearest hospital or clinic. For a long time Rev. Mbise saw this disparate situation and urged his children to become nurses and doctors so they can make a difference in the lives of those in the community.
One of Rev. Moses’ children studied to become a nurse midwife and for a while she ran a small clinic from her two room house with no plumbing, no running water, and no electricity. Thanks to a daughter -in- law who also saw the desperate situation and vowed to change it. She got together friends who became inspired to change the situation and make a difference in the lives of those that lived in and around Mt. Meru. Thanks also to the donations from individual whose list is too long to fit in a single page of paper, as well as specific organizations namely Atonement Lutheran Church, Mt. Pleasant Lutheran Church, and Luther Valley Lutheran Church just to name a few.
Before his death in April 26, 2007, Rev. Mbise’s prayer had been answered. He had witnessed a building rise on a piece of land he had donated to anyone willing to construct a clinic building. He had witnessed the birth of twin boys who might have not survived given the timing of their birth after midnight, and the distance their mother might have had to walk to the nearest clinic or hospital. Rev. Moses Mbise died after serving as a Lutheran pastor for over 45 years. Mount Meru Tumaini Health Clinic will always stand for what Rev. Moses stood for- among other things protecting the weak and poor.
Currently, Mount Meru Tumaini Health Clinic has a beautiful small building with running water, electricity, and plumbing, seeing about 300 patients a month. Mount Meru Tumaini Health Clinic receives volunteer medical as well as non-medical individuals to help at the clinic, and neighboring primary school.
