Thanks to Gary McDonald for repairing one of the benches at Trinitie Park. This bench had been damaged recently and Gary was able to make it usable again. At the same time, he made some repairs to the fence around the tennis courts to make it more secure. Thanks for the work, Gary!

If you notice any problems in our parks, trails or other common areas, please call or send an email to the CPOA office and Maureen McGovern (Properties Chair) will work to get any issues addressed. If you would like to volunteer from time to time to help Maureen make these small repairs, please contact her to get on the list.

Have you applied for your 2024 Dare County reentry permit?

When a mandatory evacuation is issued to ensure public safety (think hurricanes), individuals must present a current reentry permit* (along with a valid corresponding ID) and follow a staged reentry process.

For more detailed information—and to obtain your 2024 reentry permit—please visit www.DareNC.gov/Reentry.

*Expired reentry permits from previous years will not be accepted. All Dare County residents are welcome to apply for a reentry permit; however, a valid ID that contains a Dare County address is sufficient on its own for local residents, and a reentry permit is optional, not necessary, for residents.

Southern Shores Historic Flat Top Cottages Events 03/02/2024

I’ve had the honor of sitting on the Historic Landmark Commission board for the last few years working to preserve our historic flattops! Please consider attending the tour or donating to this wonderful organization!

Message from Sally and Steve Gudas…

We invite you to attend our 6th Southern Shores Historic Flat Top Cottage tour on April 27th which features 14 vintage flat tops that tour-goers may visit from 1 to 5 PM in the afternoon. The tour proceeds benefit the Flat Top Preservation Fund of the Outer Banks Community Foundation. Online ticket sales begin today at the following link https://southernshoreshistoricflattops.ticketleap.com/. $10 tickets will also be available the day of the tour from 10 AM - 1:30 PM at our tent at Southern Shores Crossing shopping center (cash or check only).

We are especially excited that all 5 flat tops that have been designated as Southern Shores Historic Landmarks will be on our tour:
23 Porpoise Run, 142 Ocean Blvd, 156 Wax Myrtle Trail, 170 Ocean Blvd, and 218 Ocean Blvd. There is one additional Historic Landmark that is not a flat top and therefore is not on the tour.

We are also excited that the Frank Stick-designed flat top at 13 Skyline Road that is now owned by the Town will be on the tour.

We continue to encourage our fellow flat top owners to apply for Historic Designation and we hope that you might encourage them as well as you tour the cottages.

We hope you will join us on the 27th and we ask that you please share this information with your family, friends, and business associates.

All the best,

Sally & Steve Gudas

From Len Schmitz!!

Hello Everyone,

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. I had cancelled this week's beach grass planting because they forecasted rain for Tuesday through Friday. Well... you know what they say... If you don't like the weather, wait a minute. It looks like it's only going to rain Tuesday night and Wednesday, with Thursday just a little cloudy, and temps near 60. Who is up for a little grass planting on Thursday? The town of Southern Shores has asked Better Beaches, and the Southern Shores Civic Association to help finish the area of dunes that the contractor they hired didn't finish. It's in the Pelican Watch section of Southern Shores, just north of the Kitty Hawk pier. A lot of this was planted last year, and there is existing growth on the lower part of the sand fence. We will be planting just on the top part of the dune. So, I'm going to be planting from 11am to noon on Thursday Dec. 28th. We can meet at the northernmost beach access, which I believe is by #22 Pelican Watch. It looks like most of the houses are rentals, and are empty, so I don't think parking for an hour will be a problem. We will be starting at the north end of Pelican Watch and work south towards the pier. I hope you can make it.

Len

PS. Keep New Years Day 2024 open for a combined Southern Shores , Duck beach grass planting party at the towns line. Details will be coming soon.

A special committee has formed to review the current CPOA restrictive Covenants/By-laws to provide suggested changes to the CPOA Board of Directors. This committee will also craft a survey that will be sent to each CPOA member to gauge interest in updating these important legal documents that govern the lives of all CPOA members. We invite you to join this committee. If committee membership numbers are large, then we'll spend some time at the first meeting to discuss subcommittees and their responsibilities, duties, etc.

2023 Angel Tree Gift 11/26/2023

2023 Angel Tree
There has been a great response from Chicahauk residents in providing presents for the six children that are hoping for an extra special Christmas this year. But there are still some spots that are open although you might have to scroll down a little to find the gifts that say, "Sign Up" instead of "Full". Click on our Angel Tree Link to select the gifts you want to share with these children as you do your shopping this holiday season!

To make sure that everyone has time to do their shopping for their Angel Tree gift, we are extending the deadline until Wednesday, December 6th. That gives you an additional morning to drop off your presents (12/5) at the Chicahauk office in the Pitt Center. A final drop-off will be held on December 6th from 5-7pm at the Pitt Center. If you cannot come by the Pitt Center for any of the drop-offs, please contact Carolyn Hoover ([email protected]) as soon as possible.

Remember that your gifts should be labeled with the child's "code" ("Child 43-A-1") and should not be wrapped. The Women's Club will make sure the presents are wrapped before they are given to the family.

If you have any other questions, please contact Carolyn Hoover ([email protected]). Thanks for helping these kids have a special Christmas!

Happy Thanksgiving from your Chicahauk BOD!

11/13/2023

Thankful for our TOSS Sprig Volunteers! Message below is from Len Schmitz! Thank you Len!!!

Hello all Volunteers,

We had a great turn out for our inaugural planting of the season. The wind died down, and it was perfect beach grass planting weather. The sand was still a little wet, which made planting easier. We had 14 people show up, and in just a little over an hour we got 4,000 sprigs in the ground, and covered 500 ft. of dune. Thanks to all who were able to show up due to the change in schedule. I have had some requests for more advance notice of planting dates, so here is my schedule for the next week. I still have some grass left over from the last order so we are going to plant again this week on Thursday 11am to noon. We are going to meet at Second Avenue and pick up where we left off and go north.
Sunday November 19th will be the next planting and we will probably be planting around 3rd ave. Then it's Thanksgiving week. I was thinking about the Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving depending on weather. There will be a lot of visitors that week, and we could have a record turn out. So maybe we can plant at Hillcrest to accommodate parking.
I hope one of these dates is convenient for you, and will send out another email to confirm plantings.

Len

Update on Chicahauk Dune crossover! Thank you Joel Newton!!

Soft Re-opening of 96A Ocean Blvd/Chicahauk Dune Crossover

Phase 1 (relocated stairs, a landing and ramp to the beach) shown in the foreground of the photo above, is the portion of the crossover re-opening, although some work (e.g., Trex guardrail tops and cutting post tops) will be accomplished in the coming week. You will also find a lot of sand at the end of the ramp in the toe of the dune. Our experience is that this sand will disappear rapidly as the result of pedestrian erosion. For the long haul we have requested permission from CAMA to install beach walk mats in this area.

Phase 2 of the project, zigzag ramps from the viewing deck to the bottom landing is still under construction. However, we are way ahead of schedule thanks to our contractor working 8 - 8 for three days to accomplish all the basic heavy construction. Volunteers are doing all the railing work, and they, too, have made a yeoman effort towards completion of the ramp project.

Finally, the benches on the viewing deck can’t be used at this time as they’re being used to store construction debris.
